Majors Run Wild on the IceDogs

MISSISSAUGA, ON - After a thrilling victory in Kitchener on Friday night, the Majors returned home to face the Niagara IceDogs, looking to continue their strong play. The home team certainly sent a message as 16 players recorded at least a point today, contributing to a 10-1 Mississauga victory.

In the past week, the Majors had allowed their opponents to jump out to a lead early and had to fight their way back. They changed that trend tonight, when Justin Shugg scored his team leading 30th goal of the season at 3:05. Stuart Percy and Brett Flemming assisted on the Shugg goal. The Majors kept up the pressure and scored again at 10:53 as Maxim Kitsyn notched his fifth goal as a Major, with Mika Partanen and Jordan Mayer getting the assists. Marc Cantin capped off a strong first period for Mississauga when he scored at 18:11, to send Mississauga to the locker room with a 3-0 lead. The scoring continued to be shared as Corey Bureau and Jamie Wise got the assists. Shots on goal after the first period were 16-6 in favour of Mississauga.

The Majors did not let up in the second. The Majors fourth goal of the day came off the stick of Jordan Mayer at 4:58 as he recorded his second point of the game, with Kitsyn and Michael D'Orazio recording the assists. One of Friday night's heroes was the next Major to score, as Rob Flick put home his 26th of the season with David Corrente getting the assist. At 11:42, while on the powerplay, Mayer continued his strong game with his second goal and third point of the game to put the Majors ahead 6-0. Cantin and D'Orazio each recorded their second points of the day, assisting on Mayer's goal. The second period concluded with the Majors holding a commanding 6-0 lead. Mississauga also outshot Niagara in the second period, 11-6.

Mississauga continued to score in bunches in the third period, this time beating a different netminder as Mike Gallardi replaced Mark Visentin. The first goal of the period came from Derek Schoenmakers who recorded his 10th goal of the season at 1:09. Friday night's hero, Chris DeSousa, got his name on the scoresheet with an assist on Schoenmakers goal. It was David Corrente's turn next, as he scored just his second goal of the season with a big slap shot at 4:29. Shugg and Kitsyn grabbed the assists on the Corrente goal. Shugg then extended his team lead to 31 with a goal at 10:13 to make it 9-0 Mississauga. Devante Smith-Pelly and Casey Cizikas got their first points of the day on Shugg's goal. Niagara finally solved JP Anderson at 16:04, with a powerplay goal off the stick of Darren Archibald. Steven Shipley and Jesse Graham got the assists on what would prove to be Niagara's only goal of the game. Cizikas got the final goal of the game for the Majors, as he scored at 17:04 to make it 10-1. D'Orazio and Cantin collected the final two assists of the game for Mississauga. Shots on goal in the third period were 18-14 in favour of the Niagara.

JP Anderson got the start in net for the Majors and was strong, making 29 saves on 30 shots. Visentin started in net for Niagara before being replaced in the third period by Gallardi. The two netminders combined to make 31 saves on 41 shots. The games three stars were Cantin (3rd), Shugg (2nd) and Mayer (1st).

The Majors will not have much time to enjoy their victory as they are right back at it on home ice tomorrow to face the Kitchener Rangers in a re-match of last Friday's thrilling shootout victory. Game time is 2:00 PM for the annual Family Day game and there are less then 500 tickets remaining. The Hershey Centre box office opens at 12:00 PM tomorrow so come early and get your tickets for what should be an exciting game. Dora the Explorer and Spongebob Squarepants will be on the concourse meeting fans from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM so bring the kids early to meet their cartoon heroes.
