Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Ottawa, ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors were in Ottawa this afternoon, looking to reach another milestone with their 50th win of the regular season. While Ottawa appeared to be in control for most of the game, the Majors fought back late and left Ottawa with a 3-2 overtime victory.

The Ottawa 67's entered this game with just 15 skaters and they were missing some key players. Shane Prince, Thomas Nesbitt and Cody Lindsay all missed the game with injuries. Those three players are ranked second, fourth and fifth in team scoring for Ottawa. While the 67's were missing bodies, the Majors were welcoming one back, as Michael D'Orazio returned to the line up after missing the past three games due to a suspension.

The Majors gave Ottawa several powerplay opportunities in the first period. Rob Flick took a cross checking penalty at 7:22, Gregg Sutch took a hooking penalty at 14:58, Brett Flemming took a boarding penalty at 17:26 and Corey Bureau took a slashing penalty at 18:51. The 67's could not capitalize on their opportunities though. The Majors penalty kill looked strong as did their defense throughout the period as Mississauga killed off the first two minors. Bureau's penalty made it a five on three for the 67's for 35 seconds and the Majors killed that off as well. Shortly after Flemming's penalty expired, leaving Bureau in the box alone, Travis Gibbons took an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at 19:36, meaning the teams skated at even strength, four on four, for the remainder of the first period. Shots on goal after the first period were eight apiece and the score was 0-0.

The Majors continued to give Ottawa powerplay opportunities in the second period. Justin Shugg took a hooking penalty 25 seconds in with the Majors about to go on a shortened powerplay. Bureau's first period slashing penalty was about to expire and Gibbons had just over a minute left on his unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for Ottawa. The Majors killed it off though and left Ottawa 0/6 on the man advantage. Ottawa broke their powerplay scoring slump though as Marc Cantin took a holding penalty at 6:31 that the 67's capitalized on. Tyler Toffoli got the puck to Sean Monahan who fired it home to make it 1-0 67's. It was Toffoli's 100th point of the season and improved Ottawa s powerplay to 1/7. At 13:54, Ottawa struck again as Cody Ceci wrapped around the Majors net where the puck banked off Dylan DeMelo and past JP Anderson to make it 2-0 for the home side. That score would hold up until the end of the period as the Majors went to the locker room trailing by two. Shots on goal in the second period were 11-9 in favour of the Majors.

It appeared as though fatigue started to set in on the shorthanded 67's in the third period, while the Majors appeared to find their game. Mississauga was all over Ottawa throughout the third and Justin Shugg started the comeback just 26 seconds into the final period of play. Shugg skated past the defense and put an innocent looking backhand on net that beat Shayne Campbell and cut the lead to 2-1. Stuart Percy had the assist. The Majors kept up the pressure and while Campbell did his best to hold onto the lead, Riley Brace beat the Ottawa netminder at 10:43 to tie the game, 2-2. Devante Smith-Pelly and Rob Flick had the assists. Neither team found the back of the net the rest of the way as the two teams decided to settle it in overtime. Shots on goal in the third period were 14-4 in favour of the Majors.

Extra time did not last very long as the Shugg scored his second of the game to get Mississauga the extra point just 34 seconds into overtime. The game winning goal was unassisted and was Shugg's 40th goal of the season.

JP Anderson made 19 saves on 21 shots for the victory. Shayne Campbell made 31 saves on 34 shots, taking the loss for Ottawa. The games three stars were Toffoli (3rd), Shugg (2nd) and Monahan (1st).

The Majors are back on the road this Thursday when they travel to Niagara to face the IceDogs.
