Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Mississauga ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors kicked off the opening series of the playoffs tonight in Game #1 against the Barrie Colts at home. It was a close one tonight, as the Majors edged the Colts 4-3. As a result, the Majors have taken a 1-0 lead in the series.
The 1st period saw an explosion of goals, as Mississauga's Dustin Ekelman connected 4:32 into the frame off of a lone pass from Mike Pelech to start things off. But the Colts came back with three goals of their own when Alex Hutchings and Stefan Della Rovere each wired a shot into the Majors net at 8:53 and at 11:35. The helpers were Michael Sgarbossa (2 assists), Darren Archibald and Hutchings. Hutchings produced another marker with an assist coming from Matt Stanisz at 12:35 (unassisted) to make it 4-1 for the visitors. Then, Rob Flick and Jesse Messier (power-play) each scored at 15:26 and at 18:01 to knot the game for the Majors. Tim Billingsley, Kyle Neuber, Cameron Gaunce and Jared Gomes were the helpers.
The Colts were held off the board in the 2nd period as Mississauga went ahead by a score of 4-3. Mike Pelech collected the lone goal in the frame at 16:15 while Kale Kerbashian provided the lone feed.
There was no scoring in the 3rd period, as the Majors remained in the lead to take the win.
Chris Carrozzi started in net for the Majors and turned aside 5 shots while JP Anderson took over midway through the opening stanza and blocked a total of 19 shots of his own. Peter Di Salvo and Michael Hutchinson combined to make 27 stops for the Colts. Mississauga went 1 for 8 on the power-play, while Barrie closed out 1 for 6 on the night. The stars were Anderson (1st), Ekelman (2nd) and Hutchings (3rd).
Mississauga continues the series with Game #2 taking place in Barrie tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. All Majors road games are available via live broadcast on Rogers TV (Peel Region), Cable 10.
