Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Niagara, ON- The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors opened their final week of the regular season with a shootout victory, 2-1 over the Niagara IceDogs tonight at the Gatorade Garden City Complex. The win improves the Majors to 41-19-4-2 on the season.
The Majors may have handed the IceDogs a spot in the playoffs but were able to grab two points over their arch rivals. Rob Flick put Mississauga ahead with his fifteenth goal of the season at 7:19 to make it 1-0. After a bad pass by Niagara, Rob Flick jumped on a loose puck and beat Mark Visentin through the five-hole. The Majors were also successful on the penalty kill in the first period, killing all three Niagara power play attempts.
Mississauga found themselves on a four minute power play to open the second period but were unable to capitalize, keeping the score 1-0. The Majors continued to limit any offensive chances by the IceDogs and the 1-0 score line held into the second intermission. Less than five minutes into the third period the IceDogs had Majors goaltender Chris Carrozzi beat, but Josh Moes shot rang off the post. Niagara did tie the game just minutes later after a giveaway by the Majors. The Majors won the faceoff in their own zone but failed to clear the puck from behind the net. Ryan Strome of Niagara jumped onto the puck and passed out front to Andrew Shaw, who beat Carrozzi to tie the game at 1-1.
The game headed to overtime but solved nothing, forcing a shootout. Andrew Agozzino and Freddie Hamilton both failed in their attempts for Niagara while Jordan Mayer and William Wallen converted both chances for the Majors. Chris Carrozzi made 29 saves for the Majors and recorded the win. Mark Visentin made 28 saves for the IceDogs in a losing effort. The Majors will return to action tomorrow night at home against the Belleville Bulls at 7:30 p.m. The IceDogs will come to town on Sunday afternoon on Fan Appreciation Day at 2:00 p.m. For tickets or more information contact the Majors office at (905) 502-7788 x.1.
Notes: Cameron Gaunce and Stuart Percy returned to the Majors line-up tonight after missing a number of games each due to injury. Devante Smith-Pelly and Riley Brace are now eligible to return to the Majors line-up after serving their two-game suspensions. With the win the Majors have set a new franchise record with 41 wins in a season. The team is now one point away from tying the franchise record for points in a season. The original mark of 89 points was set back in the 2001-2002 season.
