Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs were edged 3-2 in a nail-biting overtime loss to the Mississauga Majors in Game 3 of the Rogers OHL Eastern Conference Championship at the Hershey Centre Saturday night.

The two teams will now head back to St. Catharines for Game 4 with Mississauga leading the series 2-1.

Alex Friesen opened the scoring at the 7:46 mark of the first with his second tally of the playoffs from Andrew Agozzino to give Niagara a 1-0 lead.

Although the Majors outshot the IceDogs 15-10 throughout the first period, the 'Dogs made the best of their chances and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

The IceDogs struck first again in the second frame as Freddie Hamilton flicked the puck up and over JP Anderson to notch his 4th of the playoffs unassisted, giving the game a 2-0 score in Niagara's favour.

Late in the period, Darren Archibald was penalized two minutes for a head check and Maxim Kitsyn converted on the power play to put the Majors on the board and cut the IceDogs lead to 2-1.

The 'Dogs would keep their lead after 40 minutes.

The close score would remain for the majority of the third period, but Rob Flick managed to capitalize on a rebound in front of Mark Visentin to tie the game 2-2 with just under six minutes to go in the third.

Both teams played a solid defensive game during the final few minutes of the period with Niagara doing a great job blocking shots and clogging the Mississauga shooting lanes.

Alex Friesen took an undisciplined penalty for roughing during the final minute of play to give the Majors a man advantage heading into the overtime frame as neither team could break the tie after 60 minutes.

Niagara native Justin Shugg potted the game-winner just over three minutes into overtime after picking up a rebound from a Casey Cizikas shot and wristing the puck into the yawning cage to give the Majors a 3-2 decision.

Game 4 of the Rogers OHL Eastern Conference Championship will take place this Monday, Apr. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Gatorade Garden City Complex.

Tickets are going fast for Monday's game, so be sure to get to your nearest IceDogs ticketing location and purchase your seats as soon as possible.
