Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Owen Sound, ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors and Owen Sound Attack faced off in game six of the Rogers OHL Championship Series this evening. While the Majors appeared to control the pace of play for the first half of the game, the Attack controlled things in the second half. At the end of the day, the result was a 3-2 Owen Sound victory, a series tied at three, and game seven this Sunday at the Hershey Centre.

The Majors seemed to come out of the gate with an extra jump in their step this game and they got the first great scoring chance because of it. While both goalies made several solid saves early on, Maxim Kitsyn forced a turnover in the Attack zone and got the puck to Jordan Mayer around the 12:00 mark. Mayer wired a shot from the slot but Jordan Binnington, who was making his first start since March 31, made a great save to keep Mississauga off the board. Shortly after, Owen Sound got their chance when Brendan Childerley fired a shot on JP Anderson and Anderson responded with a great save of his own. The first penalty of the game went to Owen Sound when Jesse Blacker took an elbowing penalty at 11:58. The Majors kept up the pressure on their first powerplay opportunity and their persistence eventually paid off. After a Brett Flemming shot which was stopped by Binnington, Jordan Mayer picked up the puck and skated around behind the net. Mayer found Kitsyn open in front and the Russian star did not miss. Kitsyn went top shelf and beat Binnington to give the Majors a 1-0 lead. At 18:22, the Attack found themselves in the penalty box once again when Joey Hishon was caught for cross checking. The Majors couldn't convert before the first period came to a close, meaning the double blue would start the second on the powerplay. The Majors dominated in shots on goal, 15-5 in the first period.

Heading into the second period, the Majors appeared to be in control although they couldn't convert on the Hishon penalty to start the period. At 9:24, Stuart Percy took a hooking penalty and the momentum started to shift in Owen Sound's favour. Owen Sound started to take it to the Majors and just 24 seconds after the powerplay began, the Attack converted when Joey Hishon put home a rebound after an Attack point shot, tying the game at one. Immediately following the goal, it looked as though the Majors might respond with Casey Cizikas skating hard into the Attack zone. Cizikas found Devante Smith-Pelly alone in front of the net but Binnington slid over and made a key save to keep the game tied. Robby Mignardi took a hooking penalty on the play and at 11:25, the Majors powerplay became a two man advantage when Garrett Wilson took a high sticking penalty. The Attack proved to have a strong penalty kill on this try though, and killed off the Majors powerplay. Owen Sound then took the lead. After Mignardi won a battle for the puck along the boards and threw the puck on net, Hishon put home the rebound and gave Owen Sound their first lead of the game. The Attack held the one goal lead through the rest of the period as they outshot the Majors 16-13 in the second.

While the Majors were looking to tie it up early in the third period, the Attack decided to expand on their lead instead. At 5:35, Justin Shugg was sent to the penalty box for cross checking and the Attack responded. Geoffrey Schemitsch scored his first goal on the playoffs on a shot from the point that Anderson appeared to be screened on as the Attack took a 3-1 lead. Trailing late, and trying to avoid game seven, Coach Cameron pulled Anderson with 2:30 left in favour of the extra attacker. The move paid off initially, as the Majors put all kinds of pressure on Binnington. They cut the lead to one at 18:49 when Devante Smith-Pelly scored his 15th of the playoffs, leaving the Majors with just over a minute to pull even. Despite keeping the play in the Attack end, they could not come up with the third goal, and suffered a 3-2 defeat. The Majors outshot Owen Sound 15-13 in the third period.

JP Anderson was in net for the Majors and 30 saves in the loss. In a surprising move, Jordan Binnington got the start in net for the Attack, his first since March, making 41 saves in the victory.

The Majors loss means the series is now tied at three games apiece, forcing a seventh and deciding game this Sunday at the Hershey Centre. Puck drops at 2:00 PM. Tickets will be on sale tomorrow at the Hershey Centre box office, through ticketmaster.ca or by calling 905-502-7788 x. 1.
