Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
SUDBURY - The 2011-12 Ontario Hockey League regular season is off to a great start for the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors.
Riley Brace scored two shorthanded goals - both on breakaways - as the Majors beat the Sudbury Wolves 5-3 in the season opening game for both teams Friday night.
Junior Harris, Joe Cramarossa and Justin Rasmussen scored the other goals for the Majors, who out-shot the Wolves 33-27 and out-played them for most of the game.
General Manager Coach James Boyd was very pleased with the way the season opener unfolded.
"It was a very efficient game and effort tonight, great way to start the season," Boyd said. "I thought Riley Brace was great and Stuart Percy and Dylan DeMelo moved the puck great in their first game back from NHL camps.
"We were in control for most of the night and I really like the way we responded and played for the first game of the season."
After falling behind 1-0 early in the first period, the Majors scored three straight goals later in the first period - including a beautiful breakaway marker by newcomer Junior Harris - to take a 3-1 lead after one period.
The Wolves got to within a goal again early in the second, but Brace scored twice in a row, once in the second and again in the third, to give the Majors lots of breathing room.
"Those goals were clutch and we made them stand up with some great defensive play," said Boyd.
JP Anderson made 24 saves in goal for the win and was sharp during power plays, as the Wolves went 1-for-7 with the extra man while the Majors were just 0-for-2.
"We have to cut down on the penalties but other than that there were lots of positives out there tonight," Boyd added.
Michael Sgarbossa had two goals for the Wolves, while Brody Silk added the other Sudbury marker.
The Majors are in action next on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Peterborough to face the Petes at 2 p.m. They play their third consecutive road game to start the season on Thursday when they take on the Niagara IceDogs in St. Catharines.
The Majors home opener is Friday, September 30th when they host the Owen Sound Attack at the Hershey Centre for a 7:35 p.m. start.
Tickets for the home opener can be purchased at www.stmichaelsmajors.com, www.ticketmaster.ca, or by calling the Hershey Centre box office.
