Majors crush Wolves

Sudbury, ON- The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors started slow out of the gates but rebounded to beat the Sudbury Wolves, 8-3 tonight at the Sudbury Community Arena. The win improves the Majors 35-13-4-1 on the season; and punch their ticket to the playoffs.

The Majors started the game slowly found themselves down by two goals in the first period. Jared Staal got things started at 7:19 on the power play to make it 1-0 for the home side. Staal put the puck past JP Anderson after Ben Chiarot's shot was saved and Anderson's rebound went right to Staal. Eric O'Dell made it 2-0 for Sudbury after a beautiful pass from Staal, as he was being hit. That goal awoke the sleeping giant, that was the Majors offense. David Corrente pulled the Majors to within one, and shortly after that the Majors went on a two-man advantage. Devante Smith-Pelly tied the game at 18:58 on the power play after precise passes from Stuart Percy and Casey Cizikas.

Percy then put the Majors ahead just 36 seconds into the second period on the power play by deking Andrew Loverock and calmy put it past him giving the Majors a 3-2 lead. Thirteen minutes later on the power play, Devante Smith-Pelly and Casey Cizikas cut through the Wolves defence like a knife and Cizikas made it 4-2 to bring an end to the second.

The Majors put the game away with four more goals in a five minute span to put them ahead 8-2. Ryan Lopes, Casey Cizikas, Derek Schoenmakers, and William Wallen all scored for Mississauga. Justin Sefton added one for Sudbury in the closing seconds of the period to soften the blow, making the final 8-3 for Mississauga.

JP Anderson was replaced by Chris Carrozzi after the second Wolves goal, the tandem combined for 28 saves with the win going to Carrozzi. Andrew Loverock started for Sudbury but Alain Valiquette finished the game and takes the loss, the two combined for 21 saves. The Majors will now be off until next Friday when they host the Oshawa Generals on Paint the Rink Pink 3 at 7:30 p.m. Mississauga will then travel to Barrie to play the Colts next Saturday night and then host the Erie Otters on Family Day Monday. That game will also feature a special jersey retirement for Majors alumnus Red Kelly, as the number three will hang in the rafters of the Hershey Centre.
