
Majors Come Up Short Against Whalers

Toronto, Ont. (Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007) - The St. Michael's Majors came close to ending their losing streak this afternoon, against one of the OHL's top clubs no less. However, after battling hard to square their affair with the Plymouth Whalers in the 3rd period, the visitors pulled away for good to win 6-3. As a result, the Majors record dips to 14-32-1-1 on the season.
The Whalers were the only club to light the lamp through the first two hard-checking periods: James Neal made it 1-0 7:04 into the game off of Evan Brophey and Steve Ward feeds; Brophey pushed the lead to 2-0 at 3:44 of the 2nd period with Ryan McGinnis and Jared Boll providing the support; and, A.J. Jenks' unassisted tally just over five minutes later made it 3-0.
However, the Majors fought back hard in the 3rd period as Jesse Messier grabbed a goal at 1:32, with Tim Billingsley providing the support (his first career point). Then, Cassidy Preston got the Majors to within a goal at 10:21 with an unassisted effort. Finally, Matt Caria tied up the game at 11:50, off of Messier and Darrell Simich passes.
Unfortunately, the Whalers pulled away on Brophey, Tom Sestito and Jenks goals at 15:37, 17:55 and 18:19 (empty-net), respectively. The final Whalers assists were collected by Neal (2), Boll and Wes Cunningham.
Chris Carrozzi finished the game with 45 saves for the Majors while Jeremy Smith provided 39 for the Whalers. The two teams combined to go 0 for 16 on the man-advantage. The game's three stars were Brophey (1st), Messier (2nd) and Neal (3rd).
The Majors are away from St. Mike's Arena all next weekend as they visit the Ottawa 67's on Friday evening (February 2) at 7:30 p.m., host the 67's at Ottawa's Scotiabank Place on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. and finish up with a trek to Brampton on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. They return to Toronto on Thursday, February 8 to entertain the Soo Greyhounds at 7:30 p.m.
