Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Barrie, ON-The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors not only responded but made a statement tonight by beating the Barrie Colts, 3-2 via the shootout at the Molson Centre. The win moves the Majors to 34-12-4-1 on the season.

The battle between two of the top teams in the country went in favour of the Majors, who did deserve the result with solid play through all three periods and overtime. Much improved from last Friday's 5-0 loss to Barrie at home. The teams exchanged chances and penalties throughout the first period and remaind deadlocked at 0-0 after twenty minutes.

Jordan Mayer got the Majors on the board just 1:29 into the second on the power play to make it 1-0 for Mississauga. Devante Smith-Pelly made a quick pass to Mayer, who rushed the net and put it past Colts goaltender Mavric Parks. Minutes later Barrie was awarded a penalty shot when Blake Parlett hooked Alex Hutchings. Hutchings made a sharp cut but shot the puck over the net keeping it 1-0 for St. Mike's. Barrie appeared to score minutes later but after a booth review it had been determined the puck only went in because the net had been lifted and trickled in through the side for no goal and remained 1-0. Just past the ten minute mark the Colts eventually tied the game courtesy of Alexander Burmistrov on the man advantage. Burmistrov's blast from the point beat Cameron Gaunce's block attempt and past JP Anderson to tie the game at 1-1, after two.

The Majors took the lead again early in the period when Casey Cizikas shot surprised Parks and beat him through the five hole to make it 2-1 for Mississauga. Kyle Clifford re-directed Nick Crawford's shot on the power play to tie the game at 2-2, 12 minutes into the third. The game head to overtime. It looked like the Colts were on their way to victory but Anderson stopped Darren Archibald, not one but twice under two minutes into the extra frame. Parks also countered with a glove save on Parlett. The extra five minutes solved nothing and a shootout would be needed.

Bryan Cameron went first for Barrie and his shot missed the net, Jordan Mayer scored for the Majors to make it 1-0 after round one. Alex Pietrangelo and Devante Smth-Pelly both failed in their attempts. It was up to Luke Pither for Barrie, but Anderson denied him and Mayer's goal proved to be decisive as the Majors won, 3-2.

JP Anderson made 39 saves for Mississauga and picks up the victory. Parks made 30 saves for Barrie in a losing effort. The Majors will be in action tomorrow night (Friday) at home to the Saginaw Spirit at 7:30 p.m. Mississauga will then travel to Sudbury to play the Wolves on Saturday night. The Majors host Paint the Rink Pink 3 next Friday night and a special Red Kelly jersey retirement on Family Day Monday when they play the Erie Otters at 2:00 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets contact the Majors office at (905) 502-7788 x.1.
