Tucson Padres News Release

In a pitchers' duel between rehabbing Major Leaguers Clayton Richard and Matt Garza, the Cubs starting pitcher came up the winning end as Iowa defeated the Tucson Padres 1-0 Thursday at Principal Park. The loss ended the Padres five-game winning streak.

The lone run in the game came in the bottom of the second when Donnie Murphy hit a sacrifice fly to left field bringing home Dave Sappelt. The Cubs compiled four hits off of Richard, three of which came in the second inning. The left-hander finished the game with eight strikeouts and did not walk anybody. Richard threw 85 pitches, 64 for strikes.

Garza earned the win for Iowa, tossing six shutout innings and striking out six. Garza retired 12-straight batters at one point. Brandon Allen and Rene Rivera were the only two Padres to record hits in the game; they both had two singles. The two hits for Rivera raised his season average to .411, the best in the Pacific Coast League.
