Vermont Mountaineers News Release
SANFORD, ME - A big four run seventh inning, fueled by two two-run homeruns led Sanford past Vermont Saturday night at Goodall Park, 5-3.
It was Austin Biggar (Lilburn, GA/ Georgia) who hit an opposite field, two-run homerun to tie the game at three. Two batters later, Nick Howie (Oakville, ON/ Eastern Kentucky) took the first pitch he saw deep to left center field to give Sanford the 5-3 lead.
The first four innings of the game flew by, as it was a pitcher's duel between John Cain (Middletown, NY/ Manhattan) and RJ Hall (Cohasset, MA/ Tufts). Sanford struck for one in the bottom of the fifth, giving them a 1-0 lead.
Vermont would answer back in the top of the seventh for three runs, giving them a 3-1 lead at the time. With the bases loaded and two outs, Noah Hsue (Mercer Island, WA/ Washington) worked a walk, driving in the Mountaineers first run of the game. A wild pitch then allowed John Hawk (McClelland, IA/ Alabama) to score. Brett Malm (Medford, NY/ Adelphi) ripped a single to left field, driving in Austin Masel (Stoneham, MA/ Holy Cross).
But the next half inning, the Mainers used those two homeruns to give them the 5-3 lead. That would be all they needed, as John Murphy (Merchantville, NJ/ Maryland) came in for the save in the ninth and shut the door for his fourth save of the season.
Cain picked up a no decision, throwing six inning, giving up two runs on three hits while walking four and striking out two. The loss went to Tyler Arella (East Northport, NY/ Villanova), who came in after Cain walked the first batter in the seventh. He gave up four runs in two innings, while striking out one. Hall got a no decision as well, throwing five innings, giving up no runs on 2 hits while striking out seven. The win went to Angelo Smith (Thornton, IL/ Michigan), and Murphy picking up the save.
Vermont (6-13) returns home Sunday to take on Keene (8-11), sitting 8.5 games back of first place Valley (14-4). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 or on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
