Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers' winning streak came to an end on Saturday night, as Vermont fell 3-2 to the Sanford Mainers in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action.
The Mainers score three runs through the first five innings and then quieted the Vermont offense late in the game. The Mountaineers managed just one hit through the final four innings of the contest.
Sanford starter Justin Courtney (Bangor, Maine/Maine) picked up his second win of the year after allowing just one earned run over six innings of work. The righty walked two and struck out four.
Sanford broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with an RBI double by Shaine Hughes (Sewell, N.J./Monmouth), scoring center fielder Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass./UMass Lowell) from first base. The hit in the right-center field gap gave the Mainers a one-run lead that would ultimately hold up.
Sanford got on the board first in the game with two runs in the third inning. Mainers catcher Ryan Hogan (Kingston, Pa./St. Johns) drove in Hughes and shortstop Carmine Pagano (McLeansville, N.C./UNC Asheville) with an RBI single.
The Mountaineers responded in the bottom of the frame with two runs of their own. Centerfielder Cam Walsh (Duxbury, Mass./Northeastern) scored on a throwing error and Michael Hartnagel (Brownsburg, Ind./Butler) came across thanks to an RBI single by Patrick Frick (Greenville, S.C./Wake Forest), who had two hits in the game. But that was all the offense that Vermont could muster in the loss.
Alex Sarmiento (Pembroke Pines, Fla./St. Thomas) made his first start of the season for Vermont and suffered the loss. The righty surrendered three runs (two earned) on four hits. Sarmiento walked two and struck out two.
Mountaineers relievers Michael Koltak (Columbus, Ohio/Georgetown College) and Tyler Fitzgerald (Peabody, Mass./U of Southern Maine) combined to yield no runs on two hits over the final four innings of the game. Saturday was Fitzgerald's first appearance with for the Mountaineers.
Jake Dexter (Oakland, ME./Southern Maine) picked up the six-out save for Sanford after pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth.
Vermont (11-12) falls back below .500 with the loss. The Mountaineers will travel to Holyoke, Mass. on Sunday to face the Valley Blue Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. at Mackenzie Stadium. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online via The NECBL Broadcast Network.
