MAINEiacs/Mooseheads Game Day Primer
January 13, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
Tonight is the final game of Lewiston's current five-game homestand, and thus far, the theme of the homestand has been offense. After falling 4-1 to Victoriaville in the opener, the MAINEiacs responded by blasting Drummondville 7-0, before 6-2 and 6-1 wins against Rouyn-Noranda over the weekend. Lewiston is now 16-7-0 in 23 games at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee this season, giving them the fourth most wins on home ice in the league.
One Meets Two
Due to Lewiston and Halifax being in different divisions, fans around the QMJHL have had to wait through 390 games to see the top two selections from this past summer on the same ice surface in a regular season game. Tonight, that vision finally comes true, as Lewiston defenseman Dillon Fournier (#1 overall pick) will battle Halifax forward Luca Ciampini (#2 overall pick). Recently, the two played as teammates with Team Quebec at the World Under-17 Challenge in Manitoba, where their squad finished in fourth place. Ciampini led Team Quebec with seven goals, while Fournier chipped in with one goal and two assists.
Young & Restless
The Halifax Mooseheads are one of the youngest teams that the MAINEiacs have seen this season, entering tonight's game with an average age of 17.73 years. 18 of the 22 players on the Mooseheads' roster were originally drafted by Halifax, including eight from the 2010 draft class and another seven from the 2009 draft class. Travis Randell is the only player on the active roster that has worn a Mooseheads' jersey for a postseason game.
Goaltending Swap
During the trade period, the Mooseheads were involved in a deal with the Saint John Sea Dogs, as the two sides exchanged goaltenders. Halifax picked up Frederic Piche, while Saint John snagged Mathieu Corbeil-Theriault. Thus far this season, Piche has a 14-3-2 record, which includes a 1-1-0 mark against Lewiston. The Mooseheads' other netminder is Anthony Terenzio, who is 7-8-1 entering tonight.
Head-to-Head
Tonight marks the 33rd all-time meeting between the MAINEiacs and Mooseheads. The two former division rivals have played each other extremely evenly throughout the years, as Lewiston holds a slim 16-15 edge with one tie in the previous 32 contests. Neither team has had a decided edge on home ice either, as both sides enter tonight with eight wins in 16 tries at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
Who to Watch for
Along with Ciampini, the Mooseheads have another early draft selection on their roster, as Martin Frk was taken third overall at the CHL Import Draft this past summer. Frk's 32 points are tied with Darcy Ashley for second on the team in scoring - three points back of Carl Gelinas. Halifax boasts a pair of NHL draft picks on their blueline, as Konrad Abeltshauser (San Jose) and Sawyer Hannay (Vancouver) each heard their names called this summer.
