MAINEiacs / Sea Dogs Game Day Primer
December 10, 2010 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
Last Meeting- For the second time in as many weeks, the MAINEiacs and Sea Dogs will collide on a Friday night. Last Friday, the Sea Dogs picked up a 6-2 win at Harbour Station, using six different goal scorers in the victory. Jonathan Huberdeau, Zack Phillips, Michael Kirkpatrick, and Stanislav Galiev all had multiple point nights, helping goaltender Frederic Piche, who backstopped the win. Cole Hawes and Jess Tanguy lit the lamp for the MAINEiacs.
They're Number One- On Wednesday, the Saint John Sea Dogs were ranked as the top team in the BMO CHL Top 10 Rankings, dethroning the previously top ranked Mississauga St. Michael's Majors of the OHL. Saint John leads the CHL with a 26-3-0-2 record, winning each of their last ten games, as well as 16 of their last 17 (16-0-0-1). The Sea Dogs also lead the QMJHL in goals scored (153), goals against (79), and goal differential (+74).
Two Different Builds- Lewiston and Saint John are two quality QMJHL teams that have been put together in two very different ways. The MAINEiacs' 23-man roster consists of nine players originally drafted by Lewiston, 13 players acquired by trades, and one player who made the team as an invite to training camp. Meanwhile, the Sea Dogs' 22-man roster consists of 18 players that were originally drafted by Saint John, three players acquired by trades, and one player who was signed as a free agent. Despite their differences, both squads are in the top five in the league.
Former Titan Tandem- In 2008-09, Nicholas Champion and Frederic Piche made up the goaltending tandem for the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Champion was 20-29 that season, while Piche was 0-19. Two years later, the two have rebounded to have terrific starts to the 2010-11 campaign. Both netminders are in the top ten in the league in goals against average, with Piche in second (2.32) and Champion in seventh (2.60).
Head-to-Head- Tonight marks the 30th all-time meeting between the MAINEiacs and Sea Dogs. Thanks to a pair of dominant years early, Lewiston currently holds a 16-13 advantage in the previous 29 games between the two clubs. Since the teams were separated into different divisions, Saint John has had a decided advantage, coming out on top in each of the last five tilts. The Sea Dogs have won the last three games in Lewiston, but the MAINEiacs have a 10-4 lead in games played at the Andrsocoggin Bank Colisee.
Who to Watch for- The Sea Dogs already have four NHL draft picks on their roster, and could have seven more hear their names called at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in St. Paul . Jonathan Huberdeau (2nd), Nathan Beaulieu (3rd), Tomas Jurco (6th), Scott Oke (9th), Ryan Tesink (10th), Zack Phillips (11th), and Guillaume Cloutier (16th) were all ranked as top prospects in the QMJHL for the upcoming draft, while Steven Anthony ( Vancouver ), Simon Despres ( Pittsburgh ), Stanislav Galiev ( Washington ), and Stephen MacAulay ( St. Louis ) are already NHL property.
