Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

VIERA, FL (July 13, 2014) - Damien Magnifico's first two career starts against the Stone Crabs resulted in Manatees losses. Less than a week after enduring his worst outing of the year in a dropped decision against the Threshers, the flamethrowing righthander got back on track on Sunday night in the third game of this series. After a shoddy first, Magnifico was locked in across eight innings and the Manatees moved a game up with a 7-5 win after a furious charge from the `Crabs fell short in the ninth.

The game could not have started more promisingly for Charlotte after Tommy Coyle and Leonardo Reginatto opened the first with singles. Patrick Leonard watched the runners attempt a double steal, but Coyle was thrown out at third for the first out. The big first baseman then plated up Reginatto with a single to make it 1-0 before Magnifico induced groundouts from Tyler Goeddel and Josh Sale to retire the side.

In an unfamiliar situation, Marcus Jensen was asked to make just his second start of the year against the Manatees. Orlando Arcia's single put runners at the corners with nobody out after Nathan Orf reached on a fielding error by Reginatto at short to lead off the first. Arcia then attempted to steal second base, but Luke Bailey's throw deflected into center field and Orf came in to tie the score. With Arcia at third, Michael Reed sent a sacrifice fly to center to give the Manatees a 2-1 lead.

They loaded the bases with one out in the second before Orf's scoring fly ball to center made it 3-1. Arcia's single brought home two more for a 5-1 lead, and he escaped a rundown in between second and third after following the throw from the outfield. Tyrone Taylor used his speed and dropped down a perfect bunt single for a two out RBI that put the Manatees ahead 6-1. Victor Roache then made the Stone Crabs aware of his power once he shot the first pitch of the third over the wall in right for his 11th home run and a 7-1 advantage.

Magnifico held the Stone Crabs to just three singles over the course of his next seven innings once he pitched through the first. A leadoff walk to Marty Gantt in the eighth and a fielder's choice groundout by Coyle came before two flyouts to center. It looked like Leonard may have his 13th homer, but his high drive to left center was caught by Taylor, who made a gorgeous leaping grab that brought it back in from over the fence for the final out.

Facing a six run deficit and down to their final three outs, the Stone Crabs watched Sale rumble a triple off Manatees lefty Trevor Seidenberger. Ariel Soriano narrowly missed a home run with a double off the left field wall that made it 7-2. A persistent at bat by Jonathan Quionez resulted in a walk and allowed Bailey to hit a three-run moonshot straight to left that brought them back to within 7-5. Scott Lieser was brought in to secure the last two outs, and he responded by fanning Gantt and Coyle looking to notch his first professional save.

The teams meet for the final time in the regular season on Monday night at 6:35 PM when Ryne Stanek (1-0, 1.50 ERA) makes his second Stone Crabs start against the Manatees Austin Ross (7-2, 3.12 ERA). You can follow all the action by listening to the game on www.stonecrabsbaseball.com via TuneIn Radio, or tuning into 91.7 FM-WVIJ in the Port Charlotte area.
