Mager Named Schutt Offensive Player of the Year

Louisville Fire offensive specialist Rob Mager has been named the Schutt Offensive Player of the Year by the arenafootball2 league office, the award was voted on by media and coaches. Mager, a Seymour, IN native, tied the af2 record for touchdown receptions in a season with 54. (Mager is tied with Donovan Morgan who moved onto the Houston Texans last season).
Mager, in his second season with the Fire, finished the 2006 season with 143 receptions for 1,918 yards and 54 touchdowns. Mager set Fire regular season records in every category but receptions. Mager also set a team record for career receiving yards (3,639), receptions (290) and touchdowns (100).
Mager, who was named All-af2 American Conference first team last week, led af2 in virtually every receiving category including receiving yards and receptions. The following is a breakdown of the categories Mager finished first in af2 in 2006:

Mager's best performance of the season came against Albany in Freedom Hall on May 20 when Mager caught 14 passes for 207 yards and five touchdowns. Mager caught at least four touchdown passes in eight of the Fire's 16 regular season games this season. Mager had just three games in which he didn't have multiple touchdown passes.
"Rob is a great athlete, we knew going into the season he was going to be our playmaker," said Fire head coach Tommy Johnson. "Whenever we needed a big play during the last two seasons Rob was the guy we could always count on."
This is the fourth season ending league award in the Fire's history and second straight Offensive Player of the Year honor. Brett Dietz was named Spalding Rookie of the Year last week. Matt Sauk was named Offensive Player of the Year last season and Danny Kight was named Kicker of the Year in 2005.
