Tulsa Oilers News Release
RAPID CITY, SD - Oilers goaltender Shane Madolora followed up his 31-save performance on Tuesday night with 37 stops on Wednesday to backstop Tulsa to a 2-1 win over the Rapid City Rush in front of 3,615 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. The win gives the Oilers a sweep of the two-game series against the Rush and pushed Tulsa into sole possession of seventh place in the CHL standings.
Rapid City turned the first period into a shooting gallery, firing 17 shots at Madolora over the opening 20 minutes. Former Tulsa defensemen Sean Erickson rifled a shot past Madolora at 5:48 mark of the first and the Rush carried a 1-0 lead into the second period. The Oilers, pinned back in their own zone for the majority of the frame, mustered just four shots on net.
Near the midway point of the second period, Oilers forward Kyle Bochek sped behind the Rapid City net and sent a turn-around wrist shot over the shoulder of Rush goalie Tim Boron. Bochek's 13th goal of the season evened the game at 1-1. With four minutes left in the middle frame, Drew Fisher put a pass on the tape of Oilers newcomer Chapen Leblond who moved in all alone on Boron. Playing in just his second CHL contest, Leblond snapped a shot past Boron's blocker to give the Oilers their first lead of the evening.
At 2:29 of the third period, Rush forward Kyle Stroh was hauled down on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. Madolora got just enough of Stroh's shot to keep the puck out of the net and the Oilers maintained their narrow one-goal edge. Madolora continued his brilliance in the closing minutes as the Oilers weathered a final frenzy from the Rush and held on for their fourth straight victory.
Tulsa improved to 3-0-0 this season against the Rush with each victory taking place in Rapid City. The Oilers are now 4-0-0 in the month of February and return home Friday night at 7:35 p.m. to start a two-game weekend series against the Arizona Sundogs.
