Springfield Armor News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MA MAR. 10, 2011 - The Fort Wayne Mad Ants picked up a much needed road victory Thursday night, defeating the Springfield Armor 96-83 at the MassMutual Center in Springfield.
The Mad Ants only shot 40 percent (18-45) from the field in the first half, but still held a 9-point advantage at the break. Fort Wayne held the Armor to 35 percent (13-37) and held them to only five field goals in the second quarter.
The first quarter was back and forth, ending with the Armor holding a 19-18 advantage. But in the second quarter, the Armor shot poorly (5-18) from the field. Fort Wayne took advantage of the Armor's shooting woes, outscoring the Armor 23-14, to give the Mad Ants a 44-31 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Fort Wayne largely was able to keep their lead in double figures thanks to improved shooting. The Mad Ants shot 50 percent from the floor, while doing much of their damage in the paint (14 points in the paint in the third quarter).
The Armor trailed by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter, and struggled mightily defensively in the final stages of the game.
The Mad Ants had five players score in double figures, led by Marvin Phillips' 20 point, 12 rebound (7 offensive boards) effort. Ryan Wittman and Darnell Lazare each chipped in with 14 points, while Corey Allmond added 13.
Springfield was led by JamesOn Curry's 17 points and Chas McFarland scored 11 points in his first game back from injury.
Fort Wayne improves its record to 18-22 with the victory, one half game ahead of the Texas Legends for the eighth and final playoff spot. The Armor fall to 11-30 with the loss.
The Armor and Mad Ants will do battle again on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the MassMutual Center.
