Chicago Steel News Release

GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Chicago Steel forward Macklin Celebrini was named 2023 USHL Rookie of the Year, the United States Hockey League announced Tuesday.

Celebrini, a 6-foot, 199 lbs., 16-year-old forward from Vancouver, British Columbia, was named to the All-USHL First Team and All-Rookie First Team earlier this week.

Celebrini is the fourth player in Steel history to win the award, joining Brendan Brisson (2019-2020), Robby Jackson (2013-2014), and Danny Richmond (2001-2002).

Celebrini shattered the USHL record for most points by a U17 player (69, Taylor Cammarata 2011-2012), registering 86 points (46G, 40A) in 50 games played, leading all USHL players. The second closest rookie in points was Sioux City's Ryan Conmy with 62.

"Mack's adjustment to the USHL as a rookie was astounding," said Steel Head Coach and General Manager Mike Garman. "Every week you could see him developing as a player and becoming more dominant. His relentless work ethic on and off the ice is a huge reason why he enjoyed so much success in his rookie season."

Celebrini is a top prospect in the 2024 NHL Draft and competed for Canada in both the 2022 IIHF World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in November and the recent 2023 IIHF World Under-18 Championship.

In the U18 tournament, Celebrini matched Canada's single-tournament scoring record with 15 points and surpassed the most points by a player 16 or younger for Canada in the tournament, moving ahead of Connor Bedard, Shane Wright and Connor McDavid. Celebrini scored the overtime game-winning goal in the third place game, helping Canada earn a bronze medal.
