Machado Delivers In Shorebirds Opening Night Win, 2-1

Salisbury, Md. - Orioles first round pick Manny Machado delivered a two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Shorebirds bullpen held off the Greensboro Grasshoppers for a 2-1 win on Opening Night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in front of 2,891 fans. The Grasshoppers managed only one hit from the fifth inning through the ninth inning.

Greensboro scored the first run of the night in the top of the third inning. Jacob Realmuto led off with a triple that one-hopped the right-center field wall. The next batter, Pedro Mendoza, grounded to second to bring home Realmuto.

The Shorebirds responded in the sixth inning. Brenden Webb drew a lead off walk from Greensboro starter Kyle Winters. Two batters later, Mychal Givens smoked a single into center field to push Webb, who was off on the pitch, to third. Then, Manny Machado blasted a two-run triple that bounced onto the warning track in right-center field to give the Shorebirds a 2-1 lead.

The Shorebirds pitching staff held the Grasshoppers in check. Luis Noel tossed four innings in a starting role and allowed just four hits and one run.

The Grasshoppers managed just one hit over the final five innings. Chris Petrini tossed three scoreless innings in relief of Noel. He allowed just one hit and struck out three batters. Kyle Schrader tossed a scoreless eighth inning and David Walters earned the save by pitching a perfect ninth inning.

The Shorebirds are back in action on Friday, April 8 against the Greensboro Grasshoppers at 7:05 p.m. RHP Tim Adleman makes the start for Delmarva.
