Shane Greene allowed four hits over six innings and Gary Sanchez had two hits, including a two-run homer as the Charleston RiverDogs won the season opener over the Lexington Legends 6-1 Thursday night in front of 7,999 fans at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
Sanchez led off the second inning with a single off Legends' starter Mike Foltynewicz, and later reached second on a passed ball. He went to third on a sacrifice fly by Ramon Flores and came home on a single by Kelvin DeLeon. Kyle Roller followed with a double to left center to score DeLeon, giving Charleston a 2-0 lead.
The Legends answered with a run in the bottom of the third. Bryce Lane led off with an infield hit, and went to second on a throwing error by Anderson Feliz. Lane moved to third on an infield out by Delino DeShields Jr. and scored on an infield out by Jiovanni Mier.
Charleston struck for three in the top of the fifth. With one out, Slade Heathcott doubled and Feliz walked. J.R. Murphy grounded into a force play at second, with Heathcott moving to third. Heathcott came home when DeShields dropped the ball after recording the forceout at second. Sanchez then hit a 420-foot drive over the scoreboard to give the RiverDogs a 5-1 lead.
Charleston scored its final run in the eighth inning off Legends reliever Gabriel Garcia. Murphy reached when his pop fly fell untouched just inside the first base line near home plate. He went to second on a wild pitch. After Sanchez struck out, Rob Segedin singled, moving Murphy to third, from where he scored on an infield out by Ramon Flores.
Greene (1-0) picked up the win. Danny Burawa pitched the last three innings to earn a save. Foltynewicz (0-1), who pitched the first five innings, took the loss. Garcia struck out four in three innings of relief.
The two teams meet again Friday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
