Waterloo, Iowa-Scott MacDonald's wings will be a different color in 2012-2013 as the forward trades his Waterloo Black Hawks sweater for a University of British Columbia Thunderbirds hockey jersey. The Canadian college announced MacDonald's commitment to their program Thursday.

The 21-year-old, who is a native of Surrey, British Columbia, played in Waterloo for one season. United States Hockey League age limits would have prevented MacDonald from returning to the Black Hawks next fall. Three years of major junior hockey in Canada's Western Hockey League with the Everett Silvertips and Chilliwack Bruins made him ineligible to attend an NCAA Division I college.

Acquired just before the beginning of the 2011-2012 campaign by the Black Hawks, MacDonald tied for fourth on the squad with 17 goals in 49 regular season games. He also contributed 14 assists and was +6. On January 30th, MacDonald was named co-winner of the USHL's Offensive Player of the Week Award after scoring four goals in two games. His weekend was highlighted by a hat trick, including two shorthanded goals, helping Waterloo to rally for a 6-5 road shootout win against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. MacDonald appeared in all 15 of the Hawks' Clark Cup playoff games, notching a goal and four assists.

"As an older player having to adjust to a new team and league, Scott held up well in a challenging situation," said Black Hawks head coach P.K. O'Handley. "I'm glad he will have the opportunity to continue playing the game and wish him nothing but the best."

Among MacDonald's 2011-2012 teammates, 17 from Waterloo's final roster have made Division I college commitments. The University of British Columbia is located in Vancouver. UBC is a member of the Canada West Universities Athletics Association, which oversees 16 schools participating in eleven sports.
