Mississippi Braves News Release
Montgomery, AL - The Mississippi Braves had the Montgomery Biscuits with their backs to the wall, leading 2-1 with two outs in the ninth and a man at first, but Kyeong Kang wouldn't let the Biscuits lose.
Kang sent a Ryne Harper pitch rocketing down the right field line, just fair for a walkoff two-run home run, his fifteenth of the season, to give the Biscuits a 3-2 win.
The blow came suddenly, leaving the Braves breathless after they had just broken a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth. Greg Golson singled to center to plate Omar Luna from third base, scoring what the Braves thought was a winning run.
Kang's homer spoiled an otherwise great night on the hill for Mississippi. Aaron Northcraft threw six innings and allowed just a run on four hits in the no-decision. Tom Keeling and Shae Simmons combined in relief to hold the tie game into the ninth.
Montgomery countered with a solid performance from Jake Thompson, who allowed just a run on four hits over five innings. Reliever Jim Patterson pitched three scoreless innings before Juan Sandoval gave up the go-ahead run in the ninth.
For Harper, it was his fourth blown save of the season and his third loss. Sandoval picked up his fourth win of the season for the Biscuits.
Mississippi struck first in the second inning when Golson doubled down the third base line, plating Luna from second base to take a 1-0 Braves lead.
Montgomery answered in the fifth, cashing in on a leadoff walk to Kang. Robby Price doubled to move him along to third, and second baseman Ryan Brett grounded out to short to plate the tying run.
With the loss, the Braves missed a chance to gain a game in the South playoff race. The Jacksonville Suns lost earlier in the night to Chattanooga 4-2.
Mississippi remains 1.5 games behind the Suns with 12 games remaining in the season. The Braves and Biscuits battle in game four of the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 PM CT. The marquee pitching matchup pits Braves right-hander Gus Schlosser (6-4, 2.25) against Biscuits left-hander Enny Romero (10-6, 2.69).
Listen live to Kyle Tait on the call beginning at 6:30 PM CT with the Mississippi Braves "Countdown to First Pitch" on 103.9 WYAB or online at MississippiBraves.com.
