Barons Walk-Off on Wagner's Pinch Hit

Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons snapped a season-high five-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Tennessee Smokies ona walk-off base hit by Dan Wagner in front of 6,894 fans at Regions Field.

With the score tied at 1-1 in the ninth, the Barons reached back and called back on the late inning magic that has driven them to the top record in the Southern League. Brandon Jacobs led off the inning with a base hit and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Blanke.

After an intentional walk to Keenyn Walker, Dan Wagner was called upon to pinch hit for Tommy Manzella. Facing Armando Rivera (0-1, 2.70), Wagner worked the count full before grounding a base hit through the right side of the infield as Jacobs raced around third to score the winning run whileWagner's teammates mobbed him on the infield.

The win capped off a tremendous pitcher's duel between the top two teams in the Southern League North Division.The two teams would trade zeroes through the first four innings of the game with spot-starter Jarrett Casey coming through with a strong performance. Over 4.0 shutout innings, Casey allowed just one hit and struck out four.

The Barons would take a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Walker led off the inning with a double, went to third on a single by Manzella and scored when Manzella stole secondduring Jared Mitchell's at-batwith the throw sailing into centerfield.

The Smokies would tie the game at 1-1 an inning lateron an RBI double by Arismendy Alcantara.The score would remain tied until the ninth, thanks to 3.0 shutout innings by Henry Mabee and Cody Winiarski (1-0, 0.00). With the win, the Barons improved to 72-56 and 28-30 in the second half while the Smokies fell to 69-57 and 35-22 in the second half.

The Barons will look to even the series at two games apiece tomorrow eveningas LHP Spencer Arroyo (8-6, 3.30) takes the hill against RHP Matt Loosen (1-3, 7.66). First pitch is schedule for 7:05 PM CDT. --BARONS--
