
M-Braves Give Up Five Unanswered Runs in 7-5 Loss to Smokies

KODAK, TN - The Tennessee Smokies (47-37, 11-5) stormed back late, scoring five runs in the final three innings to upend the Mississippi Braves (40-43, 8-8) 7-5 in the series opener on Tuesday night at Smokies Stadium.
The game marked the first meeting between the two clubs this season.
After falling behind 2-0, Luke Waddell tied the game with a two-run double to right-center field in the third. Javier Valdes gave the M-Braves a 3-2 lead with an RBI base hit to left that scored Waddell.
In 49 games for the M-Braves, Waddell is batting .304 with six home runs, eight doubles and 38 RBI.
In the fifth, Tyler Tolve smashed his fifth home run to right field. Two batters later, Landon Stephens homered to nearly the same spot in right, his 17th home run this season. Stephens ranks second in the league in homers. The pair of solo shots gave the M-Braves a 5-2 lead.
Domingo Robles posted a strong 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs. The left-hander gave up six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
The Smokies stormed back with three runs on a pair of homers in the seventh to tie the game at 5-5. Tennessee added two more runs in the eighth to take a 7-5 lead, their first lead since the second inning.
The M-Braves went down in order in the ninth.
The second game of the series is on Wednesday at Smokies Stadium. RHP Tyler Owens will make his Double-A debut for Mississippi while RHP Manuel Espinoza (1-0, 6.00) will start for Tennessee. The first pitch is at 6:00 pm CT, with coverage starting 15 minutes before on 102.1 The Box, MiLB First Pitch App, and Bally Live.
