Mississippi Braves News Release
KODAK, TN - The Mississippi Braves (40-47, 8-11) dropped two straight close games in a doubleheader against the Tennessee Smokies (51-37, 15-5) on Saturday at Smokies Stadium.
The M-Braves scored four unanswered runs in an attempted comeback in game one and led for most of game two. The Smokies have taken all five games in the series, and the M-Braves will attempt to avoid a sweep in the series finale tomorrow afternoon.
Game One
The M-Braves scored four unanswered runs but fell just short of a comeback in a 5-4 loss.
After Tennessee took a 5-0 lead in the second inning, the M-Braves started to claw back when Jesse Franklin V scored on an error in the fourth. In the fifth, Tyler Tolve doubled in a run to make it 5-2.
Outside of a tough second inning, Tanner Gordon put together a decent start. The right-hander pitched five innings and struck out eight batters in his 11th start for the M-Braves. Gordon made five starts for Triple-A Gwinnett this season.
The M-Braves continued their push in the sixth. Franklin V led off the inning with his 11th homer of the season, a solo shot to left-center field to make it 5-3. Later in the inning, Cody Milligan's sacrifice fly scored Landon Stephens to pull the M-Braves within one at 5-4.
In the seventh, the M-Braves went down in order as Danis Correa earned his seventh save for Tennessee.
Game Two
A late RBI triple from Scott McKeon pushed the Smokies ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Tennessee added another two runs in the inning and held on to win 4-1 in the seventh.
The M-Braves scored three batters into the first inning. After Milligan singled and stole second base, Luke Waddell brought him in on an infield single to make it 1-0.
Neither team would score again until the fifth. In his fourth spot start, Hayden Deal pitched three shutout innings. The lefty was impressive throughout and came up with a big strikeout to get out of a jam with two runners on in the third.
Tennessee tied the game with a run in the fifth and broke the game open with a three-run sixth inning to win 4-1. The M-Braves went down in order in the seventh.
The series finale is on Sunday at Smokies Stadium. LHP Luis De Avila (5-5, 3.28) will make the start Mississippi while LHP DJ Herz (1-1, 4.59) will start for Tennessee. The first pitch is at 1:00 pm CT, with coverage starting 15 minutes before on 102.1 The Box, MiLB First Pitch App, and Bally Live.
