Mississippi Braves News Release
CHATTANOOGA, TN -- 20-year-old Kyle Muller became Mississippi's 15th different starting pitcher on Monday and the No. 11 prospect for the Braves delivered a win in his Double-A debut. The M-Braves (23-21, 52-62) took down the Chattanooga Lookouts (18-25, 54-58) in the series finale at AT&T Field, 9-4. The win helped the M-Braves salvage two games out of the five-game series and first-leg of the ten-game road trip.
After Muller delivered a 1-2-3 bottom of the first, the Mississippi offense provided the 6'7" lefty with some run support in the second. With Tyler Marlette on at first and two outs in the second, Daniel Lockhart drove a Jorge Alcala (L, 0-1) pitch over the right-field wall for his sixth home run of the season to make it 2-0 M-Braves. Tyler Neslony pushed the lead to 3-0 in the third inning with his third homer of the season, a solo shot to right.
The hit parade continued for the Braves with two more runs coming across in the fourth inning on three-straight hits from Luis Valenzuela, Carlos Martinez, and Lockhart. Valenzuela would race home on a wild pitch and Lockart's double brought in Martinez to make it 5-0.
Muller gave up his first run in the fourth inning. The lefty plunked Luke Raley and he scored on a Jaylin Davis double that cut the lead to 5-1.
The M-Braves answered again by scoring in a fourth-straight inning in the fifth. Neslony and Jonathan Morales picked up singles and both scored on a two-run double from Valenzuela. Martinez followed with a double that brought home Valenzuela stretching the lead to seven at 8-1.
Thomas Burrows took over for Muller in the sixth inning when Muller hit 101 pitches (64 strikes) on the night. Burrows inherited a runner and it would score after back-to-back walks and a two-run double from Luis Arraez. Muller gave up two runs on three hits over 5.1 innings with one walk and four strikeouts in his Double-A debut. Muller became the second pitcher this season to win his Double-A debut, joining Bryse Wilson, who did it on May 8.
The Lookouts scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to trim the Braves lead to 8-4.
M-Braves relievers were perfect for the remainder of the game, retiring the final ten Lookouts batters. Burrows pitched the seventh, Josh Graham had two strikeouts in the eighth and Corbin Clouse struck out one in the ninth.
Alejandro Salazar recorded his second-straight three-hit game going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Neslony was 2-for-4 on the night. Mississippi's 7-9 batters - Valenzuela, Martinez, and Lockhart - combined to go 6-for-12 with a home run three doubles, four runs, and six RBI.
The M-Braves will travel to Jacksonville for the second-leg of the ten-game road trip. There is a league-wide off day on Tuesday and play will resume on Wednesday night. First pitch of game one against the Jumbo Shrimp is set for 6:05 pm CT with coverage beginning at 5:50 pm CT on 103.9 WYAB and the free TuneIn Radio App.
