Lynx not to renew coaching contracts
April 20, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
The Augusta Lynx announced today that the contracts of head coach and director of hockey operations Stan Drulia, as well as that of assistant coach Chuck Weber, will not be renewed for the 2005-06 season. The search for a new coach will begin immediately.
Augusta completed the 2004-05 season with a 28-35-9 record, failing to earn an ECHL playoff berth for the fourth consecutive season.
Drulia was named the fifth head coach in franchise history in July 2003, hired by the team's former ownership group and then-interim general manager Larry Kish. Drulia came to Augusta after leading the Orlando Seals of the WHA2 to a league championship as a rookie coach in 2002-03.
In two seasons with the Lynx, Drulia posted a 60-68-16 record. The 38-year-old Drulia had a two-year contract with Augusta.
Weber also will not be retained by the organization. No decision has been made by team management as to whether the new coach will bring an assistant coach.
"After carefully evaluating the situation, we feel it would be in the best interest for the organization and for Stan to head in a different direction," Lynx General Manager Paul Gamsby said. "We respect Stan for his work ethic and dedication and know he worked tirelessly to put a winner on the ice. However, we've missed the playoffs four straight years. This is not acceptable. We owe it to our fans to put a winning team on the ice once again. We thank Stan and Chuck for their efforts and wish their families all the best."
Gamsby said he plans to begin interviewing coaching candidates immediately and plans to announce the hiring of a coach by early May.
