THE HILLCATS: Last night, the Hillcats beat the Frederick Keys 6-1...RHP Cody Martin allowed just one hit over five and two-thirds innings and earned his sixth win...The one hit was a solo home run to Keys 1B Aaron Baker...Leading the offense for the Hillcats were LF Adam Milligan with a two-run homer and 2B Emerson Landoni with a two-tun triple...The 'Cats are now 38-31 and have already clinched first place in the Northern Division for the first half...
VS. FREDERICK: Lynchburg is 10-3 against the Keys this season, and have now won six straight games against them...Most recently, the two clubs met last weekend in Lynchburg for five games in three days...The Keys swept Friday's doubleheader, while the Hillcats swept Saturday's twinbill and won Sunday's finale...The Hillcats make their second trip to Frederick this weekend...They swept the Keys in three games in their last trip, and after last night's win are 6-0 in Frederick this year...The Hillcats won the season-series last year 11-9...
SORRY MR. MORA: It's only June and we're already talking playoffs...The Hillcats clinched a first half Northern Division championship Tuesday night with two wins over the Mudcats...They will meet the winner of the second half in the playoffs in September...This will be the first playoff appearance for Lynchburg since they won the Mills cup in 2009...Last year the Hillcats never even saw a .500 record...
SEE YA IN WINSTON: The Carolina League announced their All-Star selections Monday...The Hillcats will have five representatives, RHP J.R. Graham, 1B Chris Garcia, 2B Tommy La Stella, SS Nick Ahmed, and C Braeden Schlehuber...Graham is tied for the league-lead in wins (8) and is third in ERA (2.53)...Garcia ranks sixth in the league in batting (.313), third in on-base percentage (.430) and second in walks (43)...La Stella is the only Hillcat in the starting lineup...He leads the Hillcats and all second baseman in RBI (40)...Ahmed is third in the circuit in stolen bases (20) and leads all shortstops in chances, assists, putouts, and double plays...Schlehuber is hitting .313, which would rank tied for sixth in the league with Garcia, but he is 25 plate appearances short of qualifying...He also has a career-high eight home runs already this season...
SERIES PLAY: The Hillcats are 0-3 with three splits in four-game series this season, but with last night's win have clinched their first four-game series win...They will attempt to sweep the Keys in four games tonight...It would be their third sweep of the season but first in a four-game set...The Hillcats lost three of four at Carolina and at home against Carolina earlier this season...The Salem Red Sox also took three of four from Lynchburg in a home/road series...The 'Cats have split four-game sets with Frederick, Wilmington and Myrtle Beach...
WALKING OFF: OF Adam Milligan hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to give the Hillcats the win in game one Tuesday night...It was the third walk-off win for the Hillcats this season...Coincidentally, Milligan's last walk-off hit was an RBI-single June 6, 2011 for the Hillcats, and it was the third one for Lynchburg that season as well...The Hillcats never recorded another walk-off the rest of the season...
K-MAN MARTIN: RHP Cody Martin went five and two-thirds innings last night on his way to earning his sixth win of the season...He had taken a decision in each of his first ten appearances this year before missing two weeks from May 25 - June 9...Last night's win was his first decision in over three weeks, since he lost May 25...En route to his victory, he struck out eight, which matched his season and career-high...His 9.99 K/9IP ranks third in the league among starters...
JUAN AND DONE: RHP Juan Jamie stranded a lead-off single at third base in the ninth inning of the Hillcats 4-2 win Friday night...He saved his 13th game of the season in his 13th opportunity...His 13 saves rank second behind Salem's Michael Olmsted (14) in the league...Jamie has appeared in a league-high 26 games this season, and has finished every game he has pitched...Friday night's scoreless appearance was his 19th of the season...
SCHLE' RIDE: C Braeden Schlehuber did did not play last night...Went 0-for-4, snapping a five-game hitting streak, Friday night...Was the only Hillcats starter not to record a hit in the game...He had hit safely in ten of his last eleven games, going 17-for-35 (.486) in the stretch with three doubles, a triple, three home runs, seven RBI, and ten runs scored...Had raised his batting average 54 points, from .267 to .321 in that stretch (it dropped to .313 last night)...Has his season clip above .300 the last five games for the first time since April 25, when he was hitting .324, ten games into the season...His last home run was his eighth of the year, which leads the Hillcats and is a single-season career-high (previous high, 5), and his triple was just the second one of his five-year career...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: LHP Trent Howard was selected in the seventh round of the 2011 draft by the Orioles out of Central Michigan University...The Hammond, IN native was a four-year letter-winner at Clark High School...Set school records for wins (30) and strikeouts (329)...At Central Michigan, he struck out 213 in three seasons, which ranks tenth in school history...Started just four games as a sophomore but had double-digit starts both freshman and junior years...Made his professional debut in 2011 with Short-season Aberdeen...Went 3-2 with a 3.48 ERA in 11 games, nine starts...Struck out 45 in 41.1 innings...Began 2012 with Low-A Delmarva...Went 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in six relief appearances...Complete four or more innings in four of six of those relief outings...Has made six starts for Frederick since his call-up in early May...He is 1-3 with a 5.65 ERA...Has struck out 19 and walked 11 in 28.2 innings, and has also allowed five home runs...Tonight will be his first start against the Hillcats...
