THE HILLCATS: Last night Lynchburg fell 7-1 to Winston-Salem in the series finale of a four-game set...The Hillcats split the series and tonight open up their final set of the regular season at City Stadium...Tonight is the series opener of a three-game series against Wilmington and the fifth contest of a seven-game homestand...The Green & Gold are at the tail end of a stretch of 14 out of 17 games at Calvin Falwell Field...Thus far they are 9-5 over that time...The Cats entered today three and a half games back of Potomac for the final playoff spot in the Northern Division with 10 games left to play in the second half of the season...
VS. WILMINGTON: The Hillcats are 6-11 against the Blue Rocks this season and 2-5 at home...The Cats went 5-15 against the Rocks during the regular season last year, 3-7 at City Stadium and 2-8 at Frawley Stadium...Wilmington was the only team in the Carolina League with a winning record versus the Hillcats last season...In the post-season though, the Cats topped the Rocks three-games-to-two in a best of five series to win the Northern Division Championship and advance to the Mills Cup...Wilmington has the all-time advantage over Lynchburg 190-127...Last weekend Lynchburg took two out of three in a weekend series at Frawley Stadium...The Hillcats enter play tonight three and half games back of first place in the Northern Division and three games back of the Blue Rocks, who are just a half game back of Potomac in the race for the final playoff spot in the North...
LET'S PLAY NINE: Last night's series finale against Winston-Salem was the first game in the four-game series that went a full nine innings...On Monday night Lynchburg won a rain shortened game 5-0, as the contest was called in the top of the eighth inning...After a rainout on Tuesday night, the Hillcats and Dash played two seven inning games on Wednesday night...
HOME AWAY FROM HOME: By taking two out of three games in the series at Wilmington last weekend, Lynchburg has won three straight road series...Over a longer stretch they are 13-9 in their last 22 road games...In the Hillcats last seven road series they are now 5-1-1...
THE BLANKINGS: The first three games in the four-game series against Winston-Salem were shutouts...Lynchburg won game one 5-0, lost game two to Winston-Salem 5-0 and took the night cap last night 1-0...The Hillcats now have 12 shutouts on the season and have been shutout seven times...Two of the last four games against Wilmington have been shutouts as well, including Lynchburg's 7-0 win in the series opener last Friday night...
PEAKING PARTCH: RHP Curtis Partch gave up two runs in five and 2/3 innings last night to take the tough-luck loss...He came one out shy of his fifth straight quality start and his sixth in his last seven outings...In his last seven starts the right-hander is 3-2 with a 2.47 ERA (12 earned run in 42 and 2/3 innings) to lower his ERA from 5.80 to 4.71...In his previous four starts he was 1-3 with a 13.50 ERA (25 earned runs in 16 and 1/3 innings)...In those four outings he gave up 42 hits in 16 and 1/3 innings...
NOT SO GREEN: OF Ryan LaMarre made his Advanced-A debut Wednesday night and went a combined 2-for-5 with two walks and a run scored...In the bottom of the sixth inning he doubled, hustled to third on a fielder's choice and scored the game winning run...The former Michigan Wolverine was a second round selection of the Reds in this year's draft...In 60 games with the Dragons he hit .282 with five home runs and 29 RBI...His final season at U of M, he batted .419 with five home runs and 40 RBI in 36 games as a junior...In June the Hillcats received UTIL Brodie Greene, who was a fourth round selection in this year's draft out of Texas A&M...Greene is now batting .276 with a home run, 19 RBI and 32 runs scored in 60 games...
KNUCKLE PUCK: UTIL Cody Puckett hit his 40th double of the season Wednesday night to put him alone in second place on the single season all-time Hillcats list (passing Freddy Garcia, 1996 and Pat Magness, 2005)...He is now one short of tying the single season record (Ray Navarrette, 2002)...He is also five short of tying the all-time Lynchburg record (45, Scott Cooper, 1988)...Puckett is tied for first in the CL in doubles, second in extra-base hits (61), fourth in home runs (17) and fourth in total bases (220)...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Aaron Crow was selected by the Royals in the first round (12th overall) of the 2009 draft...He was selected in 2008 draft in the first round (ninth overall) by the Washington Nationals, but did not sign...This was after he went 13-0 with a 2.35 ERA in 15 starts for Missouri...In 2008 he signed with the Fort Worth Cats and pitched just one scoreless inning in the independent American Association...The next year he again pitched for Fort Worth, going 3-0 with a 1.06 ERA in three starts with the Cats...He was then drafted by the Royals and signed on September 17th...He pitched in the prestigious Arizona Fall League and went 0-2 with a 5.82 ERA in four starts with the Surprise Rafters...This season he started the year with Double-A Arkansas and was 7-7 with a 5.66 ERA in 22 starts with the Naturals...At the start of August he was sent down to Wilmington and since arriving he has gone 1-2 with a 5.74 ERA in four starts with the Blue Rocks...Crow entered the season as the second ranked prospect in the Kansas City Royals minor league system...Tonight will be his first start against Lynchburg...
