LumberKings Win

July 22, 2021 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Clinton LumberKings News Release

The LumberKings pick up a huge win over the Lafayette Aviators, the top ranked team in the Prospect League on Thursday night with a final score of 9-3.

Zach Smith of the Aviators had a no hitter through five innings but that all changed after the LumberKings exploded for a four run bottom of the 6th inning. Brayden Frazier led off the inning with a single later coming around to score off an RBI-single from Izaya Fullard. Brett McCleary followed that up with an RBI single himself and tied the ball game at 2-2, both of those runs scored with two outs in the inning. Smith was taken out of the ball game after a walk to Rayth Petersen put runners on the corners. Jorge Oleaga came into the game and was immediately taken to the left field corner by Anthony Mangano for a two-out, two-RBI double and the LumberKings took their first lead of the ball game 4-2.

In the top half of the 7th the Aviators were able to get one back to cut the lead to one, a score of 4-3. The LumberKings then duplicated their bottom of the 6th explosion of four runs with another one in the bottom of the 7th. Izaya Fullard picked up his 22nd RBI of the year with a RBI single through the left side of the infield. Then, two batters later Rayth Petersen cleared the bases with an three-RBI triple into the right center gap.

A balk scored a run in the bottom of the 8th for the LumberKings, bringing us to the final score of 9-3.

With the win the LumberKings improve to 22-27 (10-10), Scherrman gets the win improving to 5-3 on the year. The Aviators fall to 34-13 (15-4), Smith gets the loss dropping to 0-2.

The Aviators will be back for another matchup with the LumberKings tomorrow night at NelsonCorp Field, first pitch set for 6:30.
