
LumberKings Sweep Double Header in Prospect League Opener

CLINTON, Iowa - The LumberKings started their 2021 season off on the right foot on Friday night at Nelson Corp Field winning two games with final scores of 6-5 and 4-2 respectively over Burlington in a double-header following the postponement of the season opener from Thursday night.
In game one of the double-header, the LumberKings got off to a slow start falling behind 1-0 after the first inning. Dylan Emmons got the start for the LumberKings and went four innings, had six strikeouts, and walked three batters during his appearance. The LumberKings were not able to even up the scoreboard until the bottom of the third inning when Larson Barnett knocked in Dominic Milano to score the first run in prospect league history for the LumberKings. After a scoreless top of the fourth inning for Burlington, the Lumberkings exploded for a five-run bottom of the fourth inning. Cam Kennedy got things going with two outs in the inning with a two-out single. Mason Schaller then got hit by a pitch and the LumberKings had two runners on with two outs. Bryce Dreher followed up with a single himself and knocked in Kennedy two take the lead for the first time on the night. Rayth Peterson followed that up with a big-time two-RBI double to clear the bases, after him Milano came through to follow that with an RBI single to knock in Peterson. Barnett knocked in Milano and Scherrman was retired to finally put the scoring to a halt in the bottom half of the frame.
Burlington wasn't quite done yet, Ryne Schooley came in to relieve Emmons but struggled on the mound walking two of his first three batters. Mason Land doubled to left-center and knocked in two runs to cut the lead to 6-3. The next batter Kevin Santiago doubled as well, bringing home Land as well as Ben Nippolt bringing the lead to 6-5. Nolan Frey then came in to relieve and get Clinton out of the jam, he did and the LumberKings held their lead and didn't lose it for the remainder of the game. Casey Day came in and closed it out for the LumberKings getting the save with a final score of 6-5.
Game two of the double-header was a pitching battle for a majority of the first few frames between Jacob Kirman for the LumberKings and Garrett Moltzan of the Bees. The first three and a half frames of the game were scoreless until the LumberKings looked to fire it up again in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs the LumberKings got a clutch RBI double from Matt Schermann as he knocked in Larson Barnett to break the scoring drought. Like deja-vu from the first game, Burlington was not done at this point and got their comeback going in the top of the fifth inning. Ben Nippolt knocked in Zane Zielinski to tie the game up at 1-1. Marcos Sanches then doubled a few batters later, knocking in Nippolt, Kevin Santiago was thrown out at the plate trying to score another run, Burlington Led 2-1.
Dominic Milano stayed hot at the plate knocking in two runs with two outs in the bottom half of the frame bringing Clinton's lead back to 3-2. The LumberKings were fortunate for a few errors by Burlington in the final three innings, scoring another unearned run in the bottom of the 6th to increase their lead to 4-2. The LumberKings didn't look back and Jacob Kirman threw a gem on the mound for the LumberKings going the distance throwing seven innings for the LumberKings.
The LumberKings improved to 2-0, their next game will be tomorrow at 6:35 on the road against the Quincy Gems in Quincy, Illinois.
