LumberJax Release 2007 Roster
December 14, 2006 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Portland Lumberjax News Release
PORTLAND, Dec. 14, 2006 - Portland Head Coach and General Manager Derek Keenan announced the final LumberJax roster for the 2007 season today. Fifteen players from last year's squad are returning to defend their regular season Western Division Title, and they will be joined by nine new teammates for the upcoming year. The Jax will make their first appearance during their home opener against the Eastern Division Champion Buffalo Bandits on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.
The Jax feature a 23-man active roster and one practice player with members from both the United States and Canada. This season Portland adds six rookies, including three draftees from the Sept. 13, 2006 National Lacrosse League (NLL) Entry Draft. The remaining new players have been acquired through trade deals or free-agent signings.
"I really feel confident in our team at this point," said Keenan. "I think we are even more athletic than we were last season. We've added a strong scoring punch by signing Matt Holman, Tyler Heavenor, Jed Prossner and Scott Stapleford. From the back end, I really like what I've seen from Ian Crashley. He fits in well with our defensive scheme since he's a big body who can run the floor and make good decisions with the ball. We think we're going to compete with the top teams in the NLL."
Returning to this season's defensive roster are legendary goalie Dallas Eliuk and the 2005 Edge Active Care NLL Rookie of the Year, Brodie Merrill. Also joining the backline is Notre Dame graduate and Downingtown, Pa. native DJ Driscoll who has recently moved to Portland to be closer to the team. The LumberJax offense will be run by returnees Mike Hominuck, Richard Morgan and Ryan Powell. The Jax also acquired Scott Stapleford through a trade with Western Division rival Colorado Mammoth and Keenan believes his versatility will contribute well to Portland's offense.
The LumberJax play their first game this Saturday, Dec. 16 against the Minnesota Swarm at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria, British Columbia. The Exhibition Game takes place only two weeks before the LumberJax opening night in the Rose Garden on Dec. 30.
