Lumberjax Edge Mammoth In Overtime

April 5, 2009 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Colorado Mammoth News Release

DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth offense again stumbled out of the gate Saturday night in Portland, scoring only two goals in the first quarter as they lost a tough matchup in overtime to the Portland LumberJax 13-12 at Rose Garden. With only two games remaining on the regular season schedule, Colorado is now 6-8 on the season while Portland moves to 7-6. The LumberJax cling to second place in the West behind Division leader Calgary.

Due to airline delays with Mammoth luggage and equipment, the game was pushed back approximately thirty minutes from the original 8:30pm (MDT) Saturday night. The delay didn't seem to bother the home team as Portland spotted the Mammoth a 2-0 lead, but then raced back to a 5-2 advantage after the string of five unanswered scores. Superstar Brodie Merrill connected on a pair of goals in just a 42-second span to help give the 'Jax a three goal lead after the first period of play.

The Mammoth fought back in the second frame behind back-to-back goals by Brian Langtry to cut the Portland lead to two at 8-6 near the end of the first half. Matt Yager connected on a shot with less than two minutes remaining in the half to push the LumberJax lead back to three at 9-6 at the break.

Fighting for pride and their playoff positioning, Colorado came out with extra energy and took control of the third period. Jed Prossner drew rope twice in the quarter while Jamie Shewchuk and Gavin Prout each chipped in with a score as the Mammoth held Portland scoreless in the frame to take a 10-9 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The 'Jax' Tim Campeau connected on two rifle shots and Brodie Merrill completed his hat-trick efforts as Portland would draw even, and eventually take a 12-11 lead late. But in an intense, seesaw battle for the final period, veteran Mammoth leaders Langtry and Prout did their best to will their team to victory. With a goal each in the fourth, the All-Star forwards also assisted on each other's scores. Loading their team on their backs and attempting to grind out a win in this brutal, back-to-back weekend set. Prout's netter 8:50 into the period would send the game into overtime.

On his only goal of the night, Pete Jacobs would end this contest 4:09 into the extra frame as he connected to give Portland their seventh win on the year. The LumberJax were led in scoring by Merrill's hat-trick, matched by Tim Campeau's mirror output of three goals and an assist. Merrill also vacuumed up 11 loose balls on the night while Richard Morgan added a pair of goals and assists.

The Mammoth was led by Langtry's four-goal, two-assist, 11 loose ball night. Gavin Prout's hat-trick and trio of assists was added to a gaudy and game-high 16 loose balls to his credit. Andy Leyshon and Curtis Palidwor, splitting time in net for the Mammoth, combined on 43 saves.

Colorado's next home game is Saturday, April 11 when the San Jose Stealth visits Pepsi Center for Family Night at 7pm. Tickets for that game, and all Mammoth home games, are on sale now at the Pepsi Center box office, all Ticketmaster retail centers, online at Ticketmaster.com and by phone at 303.830.TIXS or 719.520.9090.
