Lumberjacks Make First Trade

Bangor, ME- The Bangor Lumberjacks have completed the first trade in franchise history, the Northeast League club announced today. The Jacks dealt pitcher DJ Johnson to the Kansas City (KS) T-Bones of the Northern League for outfielder David Jefferson. Bangor also claimed LHP Donny Thomas off waivers from the Elmira (NY) Pioneers.

The Lumberjacks acquire Jefferson, an outfielder who played last season with the Duluth-Superior Dukes of the Northern League Central and compiled a .266 average with 5 home runs and 30 RBI’s in 72 games. Originally drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 13th round of the 1993 draft, the Mountain View, CA native has a .249 lifetime average in nine years in the minors with 134 career RBI’s and 59 stolen bases.

The Lumberjacks send RHP DJ Johnson to Kansas City. Johnson was 3-3 with a 2.75 ERA with 9 saves for the Adirondack Lumberjacks during the 2002 season. The Baxter Springs, KS resident will be returning home to pitch this season with the T-Bones, a new expansion club in the Northern League.

Bangor also announced today that they have claimed pitcher Donny Thomas off waivers from the Elmira Pioneers of the Northeast League. Thomas, a twenty-six year old lefty from Baton Rouge, LA, went 2-0 with the Pioneers last season, with a 1.98 ERA and 2 saves. A former Houston Astros farmhand, Thomas held opponents to a paltry .220 average last season while coming out of Elmira’s bullpen.

The Lumberjacks open the 2003 campaign on the road against the Allentown (PA) Ambassadors on Thursday, May 22, but return to Bangor for the home opener on Friday, May 30 at 7 PM against the New Jersey Jackals at Mahaney Diamond.
