St. George RoadRunners News Release
(St. George, UT.) -- The St. George Roadrunners of the Golden Baseball League (GBL) have agreed to terms with ex-major league and Venezuelan national team shortstop Liu Rodriguez for the upcoming 2008 season. A native of Venezuela, Rodriguez is the current shortstop for the Venezuelan national team, considered one of the finest in the world, and has played in the major leagues with the Chicago White Sox. He joins fellow countryman C Wiki Gonzalez and RHP Mark Woodyard as members of this year's Roadrunner roster with major league experience.
"We are very fortunate that Liu has chosen to play for the Roadrunners for this season," said Rick Berry, St. George Roadrunners General Manager. "Having one of the finest shortstops at the international level will bring a level of skill and excitement that our fans will be sure to enjoy."
Rodriguez, 31, was originally signed by the Chicago White Sox as an 18 year old in 1995 out of Caracas, Venezuela. He quickly rose through their farm system and within four years was playing in the major leagues for Chicago. He spent the next two years at the AAA level before leaving the White Sox to play at the top levels in Mexico through 2005 while rising to the top of the Venezuelan national system during the winter. A spectacular fielding shortstop, he has developed into a fine hitter as well as he has posted averages of .331 with Cancun in 2005, .318 with the Newark Bears in the Atlantic League in .2006, and .296 in the 2007 Baseball World Cup.
"Liu will provide tremendous leadership to this team," said Cory Snyder, manager of the St. George Roadrunners. "He's a top international player in his prime and I'm looking forward to enjoying the opportunity to manage him."
