Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - The defending Golden Baseball League champion Chico Outlaws received a huge boost to its pitching staff with Friday's announcement that right-hander Tyler Pearson is set to return for the upcoming 2008 season.
Pearson, a four-year standout at the University of Northern Colorado, turned pro last June when he signed on with the Outlaws. Tyler appeared in 15 games during his rookie season, posting a 5-6 record with a 6.92 earned run average, striking out 42 batters and walking just 13 in 65 innings of work. Pearson tossed two innings of scoreless relief and picked up the win in his pro debut June 12 against the Reno Silver Sox. The high point of Tyler's 2007 season came two weeks later - on June 25 Pearson needed just 78 pitches en route to a four-hit complete game shutout versus the Yuma Scorpions.
During the off-season, Pearson participated in the GBL's Arizona Winter League and put up some impressive numbers - in seven appearances the Ukiah native was 1-1 with a solid 2.52 ERA. Tyler averaged well over a strikeout an inning, fanning 11 Palm Springs Chill batters without a walk February 21.
The Outlaws also added a pair of hurlers and a catcher to its spring training roster via the Golden Baseball League's player tryout, held earlier this week in San Francisco. Right-hander David Raichart, lefty Chris Malone and backstop Bryan Silverman were all offered contracts following the two day tryout - Malone has spent the last three seasons in the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system, mainly as a starter; Raichart is a rookie out of Bethany College (where he was teammates with former Outlaws pitcher Jake McKinley); and Silverman, out of UC San Diego, will be making his first foray into pro ball when the Outlaws open spring training camp May 12.
