LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (25-27) edged the Great Lakes Loons (25-28), 2-1, on Wednesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium in the first meeting of the season between the cross-state rivals.

After surrendering 44 runs on its six-day road trip, Lansing pitching rebounded in the opener of the home series, scattering just five hits and three walks for the night.

Starting pitcher Matt Dermody (Win, 3-1) allowed one run on three hits and three walks with a trio of strikeouts.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, designated hitter Jorge Saez singled to score Dawel Lugo and knot the score. In the seventh, right fielder Derrick Loveless scored on a wild pitch by Great Lakes starter Zachary Bird (Loss, 3-7) to give the Lugnuts a 2-1 lead.

With two on and one out in the seventh, reliever Yeyfry Del Rosario replaced Dermody, retiring center fielder Jacob Scavuzzo on a pop out, and catcher Santiago Nessy picked off Josmar Cordero at first base to end the Great Lakes threat.

Reliever Scott Silverstein (Hold, 3) worked around a lead-off single in the eighth inning, recording a pair of strikeouts.

Closer Griffin Murphy (Save, 7) stranded a pair of Loons on the bases in the ninth to close out the Lansing win.

The Lugnuts and Loons play the second in the three-game set on a Labatt Thirsty Thursday at Cooley Law School Stadium. Right-hander Brad Allen (3-0, 4.10) will make his second start for Lansing, with righty Brandon Martinez (1-0, 3.23) on the mound for Great Lakes. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
