LANSING, MI - One day after mustering just one hit in a loss to Lake County, the Great Lakes Loons managed just five hits Wednesday night in a 2-1 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts in the first matchup of the season between the two Michigan-based franchises.
Loons starter Zachary Bird (3-7) allowed just two runs (earned) in 5 2/3 innings and just four hits but took the loss. Lefty Michael Johnson (1 2/3 innings) and righty Ralston Cash (2/3) combined to hold the Lugnuts scoreless.
Lansing starter Matt Dermody (3-1) was highly effective over 6 1/3 innings, allowing just one run and three hits for the victory. Yeyfry Del Rosario (2/3), Scott Silverstein (one) and Griffin Murphy (one) combined for 2 2/3 scoreless relief work. Murphy earned his seventh save.
The Loons manufactured the game's first run in the second inning. Paul Hoenecke led off the frame with a double, advanced to third on a groundout to first by Joey Curletta and scored on a groundout to short by Josmar Cordero.
The Lugnuts pushed across a run in their half of the second on three straight singles by Dawel Lugo, Mitch Nay and Jorge Saez to begin the frame. Saez recorded the RBI but was later picked off first by Spencer Navin and the Lugnuts cold not push across any more in the second.
In the sixth, Derrick Loveless doubled with one out and advanced to third on a groundout to short. Loons starter Zachary Bird was a strike away from getting out of the inning, but unleashed a wild pitch that Navin couldn't block to push across the go-ahead run.
