Charleston Lowgators News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. (January 14) Despite allowing 26 offensive rebounds, the Charleston Lowgators defeated the Asheville Altitude in a 115-110 shootout at the North Charleston Coliseum on Wednesday night.
Tierre Brown scored 17 points in the fourth quarter, including a ten-foot jumper with 44.5 seconds remaining in the game, to give the Lowgators (13-5) a 113-110 lead they would not surrender. Asheville (5-9) had an opportunity to tie the game the previous play but Antonio Meeking missed a free-throw on a three-point play attempt.
"That was quite a game," Lowgators coach Doug Marty said. "Anytime you allow that many offensive rebounds and that many second chances you better shoot well from the field. Luckily we did. We also did a great job hitting free-throws tonight against a really good Asheville team."
After leading the majority of the contest and fighting off two Asheville comeback attempts, the Lowgators allowed the Altitude to tie the game twice in the third quarter and to take two brief leads in the fourth period. Asheville was relentless around the offensive glass and scored 34 second chance points to the Lowgators 17.
Charleston won the game on the free-throw line nailing 32 of 38 shots. Asheville was 11 for 18 from the charity stripe.
Altitude coach Joey Meyer said, "It is very difficult to win a game when the other team shoots 20 more free-throws than you do."
Charleston was led by Brown's 24 points and 8 assists. Alpha Bangura added 22 and 10 rebounds. The Altitude had seven men in double figures including all five players that came off the bench. Antonio Meeking paced Asheville with 20 points. Greg Stevenson chipped in with 12 points and 10 caroms.
The Lowgators travel to Columbus on Friday night while Asheville hosts Fayetteville on Friday as well.
