Charleston Lowgators News Release
North Charleston, S.C. (August 28, 2002) â Former North Charleston assistant coach Doug Marty has been named the new head coach of the Lowgators, it was announced today by NBDL Executive Director Karl Hicks. Marty replaces former head coach Alex English, who accepted the Director of Player Development position with the Atlanta Hawks.
"Doug is a bright young coach with a wealth of international coaching and playing experience," Hicks said. "He was integral to the Lowgators success last season, and we fully expect the team to maintain its level of competitiveness under his leadership."
Marty's professional basketball career took him on a 14-year international tour, before returning to the U.S. in September 2001 for the assistant coaching position with the NBDL and North Charleston.
Marty was a three-year starter at point guard for Stanford (1979-â82) and three times led the Cardinal in assists and minutes played. After serving as a graduate assistant coach at Stanford, Marty played professionally in Denmark (1984-87) where he led the National League in scoring at 31.2 ppg during his second season.
During his postgraduate studies at the University of Warwick in England, Marty was captain of the basketball team (1985-86) and averaged 36.2 ppg. He also served as head coach of the Luxembourg Basketball Federation's Ad Contern Team (1993-96) and head basketball instructor at the National Institute of Sports and was a player/coach for six seasons in the Norwegian National League.
Marty is also no stranger to winning championships, garnering national titles in Luxembourg (2001) as a coach and in Norway (1998) as a player.
"I'm thrilled and thankful for this opportunity and look forward to getting on court with the players," said Marty. "We will work very hard to help our guys develop and form a team the community can be proud to support."
After completing his undergraduate work at Stanford, Marty earned a Master's Degree in International Studies from the University of Warwick in Coventry, England (1986) and a Master's Degree in Education from Harvard University (2000).
