West Virginia Black Bears News Release
GRANVILLE, W.V. - Sparked by LF Tyler Hill's game-tying home run in the ninth and CF Yoan Aybar's go-ahead two-run shot in the twelfth inning, Lowell defeated West Virginia 5-2 in 12 innings on Sunday night from Monongalia County Ballpark. Reliever RHP Matt Frawley took the loss allowing three earned runs through one inning.
Black Bears' starter RHP Stephan Meyer kept Lowell's offense off-balance in the beginning of the game tossing the first three innings scoreless. The Spinners jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth as LF Tyler Hill worked a leadoff walk and then would eventually come around to score on a Black Bears' error. Meyer didn't allow an earned run over five innings while surrendering just two hits.
West Virginia tallied six hits over the first four innings but couldn't push any runs across against Lowell starter RHP Kevin Steen. In the bottom of the fifth, the Black Bears' offense broke out, taking a 2-1 lead on LF Hunter Owen's RBI double and an RBI sacrifice fly from 3B Will Craig.
RHP Matt Anderson relieved Meyer in the sixth and retired the side in order. Manager Wyatt Toregas would go to the bullpen once again as RHP Neil Kozikowski entered an inning later and threw a scoreless frame.
After the Black Bears were held scoreless in the bottom of the eighth, reliever RHP Brandon Bingel entered in the ninth. The Spinners tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the inning on a one out solo home run over the left field wall from LF Tyler Hill.
Lowell threatened in the top of the tenth as 1B Tucker Tubbs started the frame with a single. Then, a bunt single from Aybar combined with a fielding error put runners on second and third with zero outs. But, Bingel would work out of the jam, inducing two pop-outs and a strikeout.
In the top of the twelfth inning, the Spinners would take a 5-2 lead on a two-run home run from Aybar and Hill's RBI single. West Virginia would bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the frame as Craig walked and RF Matt Diorio singled, but Lowell reliever RHP Pat Goetze retired PH Albert Baur to log his second save of the year.
CF Sandy Santos paced West Virginia's 12-hit attack going 3-for-5 with a walk and a run scored out of the leadoff spot to increase his season average to .311. For Lowell, Aybar went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored while reliever RHP Keuhl McEachern earned the win, throwing 4.2 scoreless innings.
The Black Bears (18-18) and Lowell Spinners (21-15) will meet again for the second game of the series tomorrow night at 7:05 PM from Monongalia County Ballpark.
