Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

TROY, NY --- Carmen Benedetti's walkoff two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Tri-City its first lead of the game as the ValleyCats rallied from three different deficits to beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 6-5 in New York-Penn League action Sunday evening at Bruno Stadium.

The ValleyCats rallied from 1-0 and 4-1 deficits to tie game before Vermont took a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth on Eli White's second sacrifice fly of the game to score James Terrell, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, a double and RBI in the contest. But the ValleyCats got the bottom of the ninth started with back-to-back walks off Lake Monsters reliever Marc Berube (0-1), who had allowed a Tyler Wolfe two-run single to tie game 4-4 in the eighth.

Stephen Wrenn followed with a sacrifice bunt off Derek Beasley that first baseman Miguel Guzman was unable to handle for Vermont's fourth error of the game and allowed the ValleyCats to load the bases with no outs. Benedetti followed with a first-pitch single to center scoring Alexander De Goti with the tying run and Ryne Birk with the winning run to hand the Lake Monsters their second straight one-run loss.

Vermont took a 1-0 lead in the second on a Terrell RBI single, but Tri-City tied the game in the fourth on Taylor Jones' sixth (and ValleyCats league-leading 32nd) home run of the season. It was the only run of the game allowed by Lake Monsters starter Ivan Andueza, who after walking the first two batters of the game allowed just three hits, one walk and five strikeouts over the next six innings.

Miguel Mercedes led off the top of the sixth for Vermont with a 403-foot home run over the Tri-City bullpen in leftfield to give the Lake Monsters the lead back at 2-1. It was the sixth home run of the season for Mercedes, the most in a season for a Vermont player since 2013 when B.J Boyd hit eight homers. The Lake Monsters built the advantage to 4-1 in the seventh on White's first sacrifice fly and a Nate Mondou two-out RBI bunt single.

The ValleyCats tied the game 4-4 with an unearned run off reliever Tyler Painton in the bottom of the seventh and Wolfe's two-run single in the eighth. After starter Andueza allowed one run on three hits over the first six innings, three Vermont relievers combined to allow five runs on five hits in just two-plus innings with two blown saves and the loss.

Benedetti was 3-for-5 with a run scored and the game-winning two-run single, while Juan Santos (1-0) recorded the final out of the top of the ninth inning to earn the win for Tri-City (19-17). Mercedes and Mondou each had two hits and and RBI for Vermont (17-19).

The Lake Monsters and ValleyCats will play the second of the three-game series at Tri-City on Monday night at 7:00 pm. After the series finale on Tuesday and an off day on Wednesday, Vermont returns home to historic Centennial Field for a six-game homestand beginning on Thursday.
