Louisiana Shrugs off Penalties, Upends Columbus, 7-4

The Louisiana IceGators, which found themselves down a man often, weathered the Columbus Cottonmouths' power play opportunities and emerged with a 7-4 victory.

Louisiana was led by Kirk Byczynski, who finished with one goal and one assist. Byczynski scored on the power play 1:27 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Louisiana. Shawn McNeil picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 9:47 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Both goalies were tossed from the game during the major incident in the third period.

The the IceGators penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and three majors for 41 minutes in penalty time. Louisiana surpassed its season average of 18.0 penalty minutes per game. The IceGators stifled Columbus' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Louisiana outdid its season average for goals scored. The IceGators have scored at the pace of 3.5 goals per game during the current campaign. By firing 40 shots on goal, Louisiana exceeded the 28.0 shots it averages per game this year.

Louisiana also got points from McNeil, who also registered one goal and one assist, Ron Cramer, who also had one goal and one assist, and Jordan Braid, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Louisiana also had goals scored by Jeff Grant, Bret Peppler, and Chris Wilson, who scored one goal each. More assists for Louisiana came via Adam Stuart, who had four and Greg Brown, Matt Robertson, and Jeremy Boyer, who contributed one a piece.

The Cottonmouths forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and three majors for 41 minutes in penalty time. Columbus had been averaging 25.0 minutes in penalties per game. The 31 shots that the Cottonmouths put on net surpassed Columbus' average of 26.8 shots per game this season.

The Cottonmouths were helped by Jordan Draper, who tallied one goal. Draper scored 12:34 into the third period to make the score 6-4 Louisiana. Levi Lind provided the assist. Columbus additionally got points from Preston Shupe, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Columbus included Neilsson Arcibal and Jason Gray, who each put in one. In addition, Columbus received assists from Tom Maldonado, who had one.

The IceGators' Kiefer Smiley stopped 27 shots out of the 30 that he faced. Louisiana registered two goals on six power play opportunities. The IceGators ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Smiley was ejected from the game. Curtis Martinu rejected 33 shots on goal for Columbus. The Cottonmouths registered zero goals on six power play opportunities. For Columbus, Martinu was ejected from the game.
