Louisiana IceGators News Release
LAFAYETTE, LA - The Louisiana IceGators returned home to take on the Mississippi Surge. The Surge started fast and the 'Gators were unable to catch back up. Mississippi won 8-3.
Mississippi began the game fast scoring four goals in the opening period. Ryan McCarthy (MIS) opened the scoring for the Surge, when he snuck the puck past Scott Darling (LOU) just 1:26 into the game. Less than three minutes later Nick Klaren (MIS) was able score and put the Surge up 2-0. At the 9:07 mark, Jason Beeman (MIS) scored his third goal of the season and 20 seconds later Matt Zultek (MIS) scored his ninth goal of the season putting the Surge up 4-0.
The 'Gators found themselves in a hole after the first period but the hole got a little bigger in the second period. Jeff Grant (MIS) scored 4:27 into the period giving the Surge a 5-0 lead. Shawn McNeil (LOU) finally got the 'Gators on the board when he scored his fifth goal and 14th point of the season. Six minutes later, Zultek was able to add his second goal of the game and putting the Surge up 6-1 at the end of the second period.
Mississippi opened the third period with a goal by Matt Larke (MIS) putting the Surge up 7-1. Trevor Karasiewicz (LOU) scored his sixth goal and the league leading 20th point of the season, 5:17 into the third period. At the 12:34 mark, Zultek scored his third goal of the game and put the Surge up six goals. Beau McLaughlin (LOU) would add a goal, his eighth of the season, before the end of the game.
"We really struggled tonight," answered IceGator Head Coach Dave MacIsaac about the team's struggles in the first period. "I say the same thing every game but it is important that we start the game fast; we can't sit back and let them put us in the hole right away. This is something that we will need to correct and be focused when we return on Thursday."
The 'Gators return home for a three game home stand over the Thanksgiving Holiday. The 'Gators will take on their rivals, the Pensacola Ice Flyers, on Thanksgiving Day at 7:05. Then the defending Southern Professional Hockey League champions, the Huntsville Havoc, visit the Dome on Friday, November 26. Don't miss a moment of the action. Call (337) 704-4423.
