Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The first six minutes and the last six minutes belonged to the Waterloo Black Hawks Friday, but the rest was forgettable as the visiting Omaha Lancers took a 7-4 decision at Young Arena.

Jamie Hill recorded the opening goal for Waterloo on a power play 5:50 into the first period. The Lancers reeled off the next six, including a pair by Dennis Brown to tie the score then take the lead. In the final minute of the first, Brown set up Nick Oddo to make the Omaha lead 3-1 at intermission.

Joe Lavin chipped in a second period score, and goals from Danny Mattson and Seth Ambroz in the third appeared to send the game out of reach.

With 5:59 remaining, the Hawks brought themselves and the home fans back. A faceoff win led to a tangle in the Omaha crease, where Tyler Zepeda found the puck and flipped it in. A minute and forty seconds later, on a power play, Blake Thompson blasted in a shot to make the score 6-3. Thirty-two seconds after that, Zepeda scored again during another scramble. Waterloo looked like they might complete the comeback, spending most of the final two minutes with an extra attacker, but Omaha eventually sealed the outcome when Ambroz scored into the open net with 15 seconds to play.

The Hawks will try to use their late surge to propel themselves into Saturday's tilt with the Fargo Force. Game time is 7:05 on Breast Cancer Awareness Night, sponsored by Dr. Douglas Duven and the Cedar Valley Breast Care Center.
