Pensacola Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Pelicans wrapped up the season's final road trip in dubious fashion, finishing an 0-6 venture away from BB&T Coastal Field with a loss in the series finale with the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

Despite plating the game's first run, Myrtle Beach couldn't stifle a late Wilmington rally as the home team scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie and securing a 3-1 victory to send the Pelicans to their ninth straight loss.

Starters Richard Sullivan and Kelvin Villa dominated the storyline early. Villa held the Pelicans to two hits over six innings but blinked first when he allowed a run on his second throwing error of the inning on a pickoff attempt in the top of the sixth. Chais Fuller who had reached on an infield single and advanced to second on the first error of Villa's frame scored from two bags away when Villa tried to pick the Pelicans shortstop off second base.

After five scoreless innings started the game, however, Wilmington answered by tying the score in the bottom of the sixth with a Clint Robinson RBI single driving home Johnny Giavotella. Sullivan surrendered seven hits but scattered them over seven innings, matching three walks with three strikeouts to hold the Blue Rocks at bay.

It wasn't until reliever Benino Pruneda entered in the eighth that Wilmington got the upper hand. Mike Moustakas doubled with one out, and Nick Van Stratten walked and stole second, setting the stage for a two-run Anthony Seratelli single to give the Blue Rocks the lead for good. Pruneda (1-3) walked three and was charged with both runs in his only inning of work.

Pat Keating (1-0) picked up the win for Wilmington with an inning and two-thirds of perfect relief, netting one strikeout.

The Pelicans' final home series of 2009 begins Friday night at BB&T Coastal Field when they host the Winston-Salem Dash. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, by calling (843)918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
