Chico Outlaws News Release

RENO, NV - Derrick Loop hurled eight solid innings to pick up his Golden Baseball League-leading sixth win of the season, and Chico's 11-hit attack propelled the Outlaws to a 5-3 victory over the Reno Silver Sox Wednesday night at Peccole Park to knot up the four-game series at one win apiece.

Chico did nearly all their damage in the 2nd inning, but the Outlaws nearly came away empty. After Jake Ferris singled and Jason Matteucci doubled to lead off the inning, Reno starter James Johnson struck out Brock Ungricht and Ricky Bambino. David Pierson, though, came through with a clutch single to right to drive home both Ferris and Matteucci to put Chico up 2-0. Steve Boggs promptly knocked in Pierson with a base hit to right...and on the next pitch Jesse Kovacs doubled down the right field line to plate Boggs and extend the Outlaws lead to 4-0.

Loop, aided by a pair of double plays, kept Reno at bay until the bottom of the 6th, when the Silver Sox scored two runs on a Juan Senreiso double to cut Chico's lead in half. The Outlaws went up 5-2 with a run in the 8th off Silver Sox reliever Julio Soriano - Matteucci led off the inning with a double and came home when Ungricht blooped a base hit to left. Reno got the run back in the bottom of the 8th when Victor Hall scored from second on a two-base throwing error by Loop, but Chico closer Todd Gelatka made sure there would be no late-inning Silver Sox rally...the GBL's saves leader retired Reno in order in the 9th, striking out Massa Chikazawa and Sam Walker to end the game and lock down the Outlaws ninth win over the Silver Sox in 14 tries this season.

Loop (6-2) tied his career high with six strikeouts en route to the win, while Gelatka chalked up his 12th save of the season...Johnson (0-3) struck out nine and allowed just three earned runs in six-and-two-thirds innings but was saddled with the loss. Kovacs, Matteucci, Ungricht and Jason Van Meetren each had two hits to lead the Chico offense...Senreiso had three of Reno's four hits on the night. Wednesday's win upped the Outlaws record to 25-13 and wrapped up the season's first half of play...the Silver Sox dropped to 18-19 on the year. Game three of the series is scheduled for Thursday, with right-hander John Jefferson (2-0) going for Chico in his first career pro start...Reno will counter with lefty Jason Martinez (2-3). Game time is 7:00pm...hear all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 6:35pm on the internet or on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
