Orange County Flyers News Release

The Long Beach Armada kept their cool and took the opener of a three-game series 6-3 at Blair Field Wednesday. The Flyers dropped to 0-2 in the second half.

The Orange County Flyers had two players, Dave Bacani and Mike Natale, and Manager Garry Templeton ejected during a typically chaotic affair against the Armada.

Flyers killer Johnny Kaplan starred for the Armada by getting four hits including a solo homerun. Kaplan also scored three times and stole two bases.

SP Bud Smith won for the second time this season by pitching six strong innings and limiting the Flyers to just one run on five singles.

Long Beach took the lead for good in the 3rd inning off SP Jamie Douglas, who received the loss. Robert Salini, however, fared much better in relief by pitching 3.1 strong innings for the Flyers.

During the bottom of the 8th inning, which took nearly 45 minutes, the Flyers made two pitching changes, lost a player and a manager to ejections and suffered a scare with an injury to LF Rich Pohle. Pohle flipped head over heels into the Long Beach bullpen when he collided with a low wall, while sprinting to catch a fly ball.

The Flyers and Armada will continue the series on KWRM 1370 AM and orangecountyflyers.com Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
